Check Out Mason Williams’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Williams.

Hi Mason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I originally started in my career as a Mograph Artist and Graphics Generalist when I was completing my degree in Sound Engineering. In order to graduate, I had to take a few video production and editing classes. After graduation, I began working in the television broadcast industry and started working on projects beyond the scope of sound and live production and moved into more post-production-oriented duties including video editing, sound design, and motion graphics/3D work. Luckily, I was surrounded by a great team that was very supportive and helped mentor me as I unintentionally started this new leg of my career. I quickly found that I loved the visual side of production just as much as I loved the audio side of things.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would say one of the biggest struggles as I was learning in a design-oriented field was to master how to simply just be an “observer”. I feel observation is one of the biggest components in being a good designer, because of you have the ability to look at good design and are able to dissect it piece by piece visually, it gives you a greater understanding of what make the design work in the first place. When I first started out, it took a lot of trial and error to figure out this concept on my own. In my early days, I made a LOT of bad designs before I started making good ones. It wasn’t until I started to pick apart the designs that I thought were amazing in order to figure why I thought they were so good to begin with. Being an objective observer/listener can be a powerful skillset in your toolkit!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It’s hard to pin it down exactly, but if I had to label myself, I’d say I’m a “Creative Generalist” with skills ranging from audio post-production and mixing to a Video-Motion Graphics Designer and 3D artist. Overall, I’m just proud to be involved in an industry that allows me to make money from creative expression. over the years I’ve had the opportunity to work on some great projects and meet some really cool people along the way. One of the values that may set me apart from others might be my strong work ethic and attention to details. I can be very picky at times, but in the end, I think it makes for a better product.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I like to listen to the Mograph Podcast from the guys over at Mograph.com. Eyedesyn and GreyScaleGorilla have some great content as well.
