Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Rodriguez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Single mother to a special child. We have overcome so much together. Our journey started with his early arrival back in May of 2022. My son was not supposed to “make it” it was bad news after bad new after bad news. He was supposed to be born In august but was so excited to meet us! He is now a bright sweet and very energetic boy! He does have Cerebral Palsy and is epileptic, but dont let those diagnoses fool ya! He is as energetic and stubborn yet loving 4 year old! We have been through so so much and I can genuinely say my family and amazing village never leaves us behind and is always looking out for us
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not, unfortunately it was a rough start. When Javi was born he stayed in the NICU at Cooks Children for 129 days. I did not get a chance to hold my sweet boy until he was a week old. Our visits were very different. We always had help from a nurse and what seemed to be a thousand machines connected to him to hold him. Very grateful for the help and very fortunate for the team we had! His heart did stop when he was just days old we were told by several providers to have an open mindset about his future and if we wanted to keep fighting for him or let him go. Of course we left it in Gods hands even after getting told he would be in vegetative state, he would have a shunt and a feeding tube maybe even a breathing tube or that he would most likely never walk. He proved everyone wrong! We did get discharged eventually, then two weeks later we had to get admitted again, my son had covid, I lost him for a full 7 minutes seemed like the longest most painful minutes of my life. Everything was just going slow motion all his machines were going off and his drs and nurses rushed in to revive him, he pulled through! We still did stay for the remainder of the time in the PICU at Cooks. About a year later my son had his first seizure. We were told it was febrile a month or so after he had another so we got admitted again and they did a EEG on him and sure enough they said he had epilepsy, shortly after that he would see specialist and then he was also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work for an Orthopedic office In the heart of Fort Worth, I did start off as a front desk receptionist and now I am a Referral coordinator. I am very grateful for my job but most importantly for the help and support I receive. My manager helps me out so much with my sons busy schedule as far as needing to leave due to emergencies for him after seizures since they typically lead to hospital stays. His therapy appointments and any other appointments with specialists that he has. I have been with the company since 2021 and I am hoping to grow within.
At times I also find myself doing hair and makeup for special occasions. It is something I did get certified for but never truly persuaded but I would love to pick back up on and do more of. Love the feedback I receive from my clients!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would have to say my honesty and how open minded I am. To anything quite honestly. Since in all reality anything can change in a blink of an eye! I have to keep going and pushing for my son. Regardless
