Check Out Megan Karr’s Story

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Megan Karr again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Megan, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Megan Karr and I am the Artistic Director and one of the founders of Bright Lights Theatre in Dallas, TX. We train the next generation as masterful storytellers who share the light of Christ. This training happens through summer camps, classes, and full-scale productions. At Bright Lights, we value Jesus Christ and work to reflect Him in our thoughts, words, and actions. We also value a passion for the art of storytelling and a standard of excellence that cultivates mastery of the theatre arts. In walking alongside our families in discipleship of their students, we believe in the responsibility to care for one another as we value the ongoing development of character traits that empower personal growth. In this, we are thankful for a community fueled by acceptance, encouragement, and support.

Over the past six years in business and four years of programming, we have been encouraged by the stories of how Bright Lights has impacted families and students in our care. It is our joy to see these students grow in their theatrical ability as well as their love for Jesus and others.

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
Well, since our initial interview in January 2020, many things have happened! Unfortunately, our company was impacted by COVID-19 in that we had to delay programming opening until the summer of 2021. However, in the past 3.5 years, we’ve had over 1,000 opportunities for students to be discipled and shine a light for Christ on stage. We have had nine productions, five masterclasses, and 14 summer camps. Over 6,000 people in our community saw the Gospel portrayed on stage and walked away with a tangible proclamation of how much Jesus loves them in their playbill. This does not include the family and friends who received the same experience at free performances of masterclasses and camps. We are constantly thankful for the opportunity we have to invest in these students and this community.

Alright, so let’s do something a bit more fast-paced and lighthearted. We call this our lightning round and we’ll ask you a few quick questions.

  • Favorite Book: I loved the book Double Identity growing up, but now it has to be The Great Gatsby.
  • Sweet or Savory: Definitely Sweet!
  • Mountains or Beach: Beach, all the way!
  • Favorite Childhood movie: Tarzan or The Little Mermaid

What are you most excited about in the coming year?
We are looking forward to expanding the number of opportunities available to students through increased programming and an increase in our scholarship fund. To do this we need to fundraise to pay additional staff at better rates and to increase our presence with our current church partnerships. It is a large feat, but we know God is good and has us in His hands. We are always seeking out amazing donors as our tuition does not cover overhead expenses.
