Today we’d like to introduce you to Melrico Fuller.
Hi Melrico, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Monroe, Louisiana. I Moved to Texas for a fresh start. I’ll be honest being a model, doing fashion shows, and auditioning for tv/ movie roles was never something I saw myself doing. At the time I was working for a uniform company delivering to different restaurants and medical facilities and I’d get compliments here and there but it was never something that just stuck in my head. My goal was to just make sure me and my siblings were financially stable. 2 years into my job I came across a receptionist who saw something in me that for the longest I couldn’t see myself. So, the more frequent I delivered the more she suggested and offered to help me bring what she and everyone saw out of me. What started out as just delivering and picking up lab coats turned into fate because she so happened to be a motivational coach and a well-known author. As time passed the more her words started to open my mind to the many doors I could walk through and I just woke up one morning and was like “ok let’s try it out”. Within a week she got me in touch with a designer who had a fashion show coming up and got me in. Although in my mind I felt I did average at best from the perception of the audience and other models it was the total opposite. So ever since then, it’s just been me working to perfect my own views of myself vs those of others to push out my full potential and become something far from the norm in the modeling industry.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not. I think my only real struggle was just not believing myself. There have been many times where I couldn’t see what everyone else saw and just the fear of taking that leap off into the water and drowning.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Route specialist and Area sales director for a bread company. I can drive anything with up to 18 wheels. I’d say I’m most proud of how fast I can grasp the concept of any particular job and at times rearrange it to work at a more proficient way than the original. What may take most 4 months of training would take me 2 at most. I’ve just never been the quitting type. Once I start, I’ll definitely finish, and with having that mentality I’ve been able to accomplish the same with modeling.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Think of the industry as a car…with the engine being your passion for the craft and the wheels being the people that support and are rooting for you… and yourself as the key. Without you there is no ignition… there is no movement. It all starts with you! As far as something I wish I knew starting out. I’d have to say what’s meant for you is inevitable. Avoiding it will only prolong your success.
