Check Out Nikki Gonzalez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Gonzalez

Hi Nikki, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I initially taught myself how to draw digitally in 2020 when I was an educator and wanted to create clip art images for my classroom. A year later my career transitioned outside of the education field and my drawing followed. I was inspired to create a greeting card line in honor of my Aunt Liz. Liz and I once spoke about her desire to create greeting cards while she was getting through her cancer journey. She never got the chance to begin, so I was dedicated to shifting my focus and getting started for her. Since launching greeting cards, Nikki Doodles has also added handmade novelty earrings as a fun twist. We’ve expanded from online only to now also being sold in six shops across the U.S. within 2024!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Initially, finding time to sit down and generate an idea or draw something new was a challenge. As a working mother of two homeschooled girls, balancing life with my family and managing every aspect that comes with running a small business including making each and every item myself left little time to do the part of the business I love most-drawing! With time, I’ve learned how to prioritize my schedule better to fit a little bit of everything in each day. I think it is very important to make sure you set time aside for the things in life that bring you joy and create a positive balance in your life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have taught myself how to draw digitally. I play around with different devices and programs to find what fits my style best. I’ve always been one to teach myself new techniques and creative skills. I am proud of that. I was not formally trained nor did I take any art or design classes. I may not draw or shade by the book but I go with what feels good to me.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love a good app that helps keep you organized. I am still reviewing a few options but currently enjoy Google Keep if you like to check off your tasks as you go in color coordinated lists!

I could spend my entire day in a bookstore if time allowed but ironically, I rarely find enough time in the day to sit down and read. To help with this, I recently started getting comfortable with audiobooks. I’ve been listening to audiobooks while I work on cards or earrings. I enjoy listening to self-help books as a way to educate myself in different areas I can improve in my life for myself and my family.
