Today we’d like to introduce you to Norma Navarro.
Hi Norma, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I arrived in the United States 23 years ago, I was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and La Catrina was also born there. Like other immigrants, I worked where I had the opportunity, not a choice. Now I can say it proud that I am one more person who gets ahead in this beautiful country. Everything changed 3 years ago when Mauricio Navarro and I began to dream. We organized the first Dia de Los Muertos Parade in Dallas in 2019. With an attendance of 40 thousand people at City Hall. It was not easy; we knocked on many doors, some opened, and others did not. But we never give up. The result was wonderful; we made our dream, cry, and most importantly, remember the people who left us. This dream reached Houston in 2021, with an attendance of 30 thousand people. We continue to celebrate Life and Remember those who are no longer with us. Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico on November 02, thousands of years ago. It is said that this celebration is so that people who die have a good path to rest. My purpose is to bring a bit of the customs, culture, and roots to this country that has given me so much.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As an immigrant, I had to go through many obstacles. Therefore it has not been an easy road.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
As Vice President of Navarro Group, I want to leave a mark in each event; I feel very proud to bring roots, customs, music, colors, etc., to the United States.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
First, as a person, Covid-19 left great sadness; I lost some people in my family for this reason. Second, as an event organizer, all events open to the public were canceled, and we had to reinvent ourselves.
