Today we’d like to introduce you to Perceived. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Perceived is a three-piece rock band out of Dallas Texas. Formed in May of 2018 and longtime friends of over 20 years – Chris Bell and Charlie McBride, decided to get together and work on some old songs as well as write new material with the help of their very good friend and bass player, Kevin Crawley. After a few rehearsals, it was very noticeable that things were just starting to click naturally between us. After writing and working on material for over a year, we played our first show in May of 2019. We then released our debut EP on Friday, October 30th, 2020, and have since performed with multiple local and national acts all around the DFW metroplex.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The music scene has definitely changed in regards to rock/metal in the music scene. It is not as popular of a genre as it used to be so finding an audience and keeping is something we have had to do differently than we did so many years ago. Fortunately, Dallas/Fort Worth has a lot of people that like a lot of different things and we have been able to find a great music family in the DFW local scene.
Another challenge has been balancing our family and work-life with our band life. Each of us has a full-time job and families with teenage children so we tend to have a lot of activities and events going on outside of writing, recording, rehearsal, and shows. The great thing about this is that because all of our kids are teens, they are able to come to about half of the shows we do so each one is a family thing too.
I would say one of our other biggest challenges has been funding. Again, we are totally independent, so we have financed everything we have done by ourselves. It is an investment we definitely feel is worth it! It has given us opportunities to learn lots of things outside of just the music. Things like photo and video editing, getting our website going, and promotional ideas.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We have worked hard to create something that we enjoy and that relates to our life experiences. We have so many different influences that we feel our sound can’t really be described by one genre. We like to use the full spectrum of human emotion to draw inspiration from. We also like to use melody and heavier riffs to add dynamic to our sound as well as to give listeners something they can relate to – as inspiration, as an escape, or just to rock out to.
Any big plans?
Our goal in 2021 was to play as many shows as possible and we feel like we achieved it in a big way. It was a lot of work but we enjoyed every second of it! We have one more left on December, 18th at O’Riley’s Pub in Dallas, TX. After that show, we plan on taking a break to work on filming a music video and to finish writing our first LP. We have slowly been playing some of our newer material live and are ready to get back into the studio and begin working on the album.
