Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel.
Rachel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Rachel Benat, Owner of The Velvet Paw Lounge
Rachel’s journey in the pet care industry began the week she turned 18, when she stepped into her first role at a veterinary office, grooming facility, and pet daycare in Uptown Dallas. There, she built a strong foundation in animal care, learning essential grooming skills such as proper bathing techniques, brushing, nail trims, and sanitary care—skills that would shape the trajectory of her career.
Eager to grow, Rachel pursued new opportunities at a boutique grooming salon in the Oak Lawn area, where she became more immersed in hands-on grooming and refined her craft. When that chapter came to an end, she continued expanding her experience through national brands like PetSmart and later advanced into a leadership role as a salon manager at Petco. Each step added depth to her technical skills and strengthened her understanding of both pet care and business operations.
Rachel eventually found her stride with a mobile grooming company in the Lakewood area of Dallas. During her time there, she not only elevated her grooming expertise but also discovered a true passion for the artistry and connection that comes with the profession. It was this experience that inspired her to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Her dream became reality when she opened her first location in Terrell, Texas. As a first-time business owner, Rachel faced the challenges of building something from the ground up, but the rewards far outweighed the obstacles. She cultivated meaningful relationships with her clients and their pets, creating a space rooted in trust, care, and compassion.
Driven by both family and ambition, Rachel later relocated her business to Garland, near Firewheel, to be closer to her parents as her daughter prepared to start school. Starting fresh in a new community brought its own challenges, but Rachel embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm. In just a few short months, she has continued to grow her client base, meet new pets, and further establish her presence in the area.
With over 17 years of experience in the pet industry, Rachel’s dedication to her craft remains unwavering. Her journey reflects resilience, passion, and a deep love for animals—qualities that define both her work and the welcoming environment she has created at The Velvet Paw Lounge. For Rachel, this isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong calling.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, there’s been a lot of obstacles, learning and growth over the years and with the pet industry the new styles, different breeds and owners visions are always changing, so learning is a daily venture in this career
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe 100% in humanity over vanity, everyone wants the cute fluffy and round face cuts but it’s not always an option. Grooming is fun and creative but also takes work from the owner at home as well to achieve that quality. I specialize in senior pets, puppy’s first grooms and pets that may have health ailments that other groomers may turn away.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe that compassion and care are number one to running a successful grooming shop, the pets best interests always need to be first before any aesthetic wants from a client. Finding that passion and love for the work you do will make you successful
