Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Herrera.
Hi Ruby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Ruby Herrera, and I am the CEO of Ruby Creative Co. I am born and raised in Chicago, and I recently moved to DFW less than a year ago. I have over 7+ years of experience in print, graphic and digital designs in a marketing design since my college days. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I’ve always had an ambition for helping my community through my exceptional designs and content–this is why I love working with mission-driven and passionate Latina/Latino entrepreneurs. My focus is to create smart, provocative, and conceptual work for small businesses, brands, and various print and online visual communications. What began as a side hustle quickly turned into a full-time entrepreneurial journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a first-generation and first daughter of an immigrant, my dad was the first to say that being an artist wouldn’t get me anywhere. Now as an adult, I understand that his fear was not that I wanted to be an artist but that I wouldn’t have the financial stability he had hoped for me. As I went into high school and began to really explore my love for computers and art, I realized that this was more than a hobby. I truly felt that becoming a graphic designer was exactly what I was meant to pursue in life. Not only did I get to fulfill my dream, but now I am also to help others bring the visuals of their company to life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe that I am a storyteller who brings life to people’s visions. As the founder and owner of Ruby Creative Co., my goal is to execute designs with the philosophy and healthy art direction to produce straightforward graphic designs for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and non-profits. One of my biggest accomplishments are the children’s illustrated books that my client, Libritos for the Heart, and I have working on since 2018. I’m also very proud that I was able to become the artist I’ve always aspired to become. Beyond design, I’ve been able to talk about my journey at multiple panels & podcasts nationwide, including Chicago, Texas, Boston, and Vegas. Working with different types of people in different industries from all over the U.S. and parts of Latin America has allowed me to expand my knowledge and experience in branding and design. Also, living in multiple states like Chicago, Boston, and now Texas has given me that expertise that sets me apart from others.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I absolutely love the culture in DFW, specifically Dallas area. I feel that I’ve connected with lots of like-minded entrepreneurial individuals who share the same goals and interests as I do. I’d say that what I like least is…don’t hate me…but the food can be so much better. Chicago really spoiled me in that category, and I’m a huge foodie, so I’m sticking to my deep dish, Italian beef, Chicago-style hot dog, haha.
