Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Adams & Maggie Rieth Austin.
Hi Sarah & Maggie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Maggie: Sarah and I met in 2012 at the Dallas Comedy House. We were both young performers and had so much fun laughing and creating together, so we decided to make it a thing.
Sarah: The first time I saw Maggie at Dallas Comedy House I knew I wanted to be her friend but I was too scared to say hi (Maggie is very very cool). Luckily, we were placed in an improv troupe together and bounded over a dumb ‘dick rope’ bit. We’ve been friends and have made dumb bits ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Maggie: Honestly, I could see how having a best friend who is also a creative business partner could be challenging for some people, but it’s always been really natural and easy to work with Sarah. We’ve had busier seasons and slower seasons, but we’ve always been steadily working toward making a body of work we can be proud of. Also, five kids between the two of us. So. We make lots of different types of things.
Sarah: As Maggie said, we’ve had really busy work seasons and then flipped to really busy life seasons. It’s wonderful that through it all I have my best friend to do both with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Maggie: We started The Monthly Junk Productions originally to create monthly video sketches for online. As we’ve continued to work together, we’ve produced numerous short films, written scripts for some pretty cool projects, and had a blast in the process. I’m most proud that we’re still doing the damn thing a decade after we started, and still as inspired as ever to make things we enjoy.
Sarah: I think something unique about our projects is that they are earnestly created from a place of joy and fun. All projects we develop – short films, scripts, sketches for YouTube – have all started with one of us saying ‘You know what would be fun?’ and then the other ‘yes, and-ing’ the heck out of it.
Also, we are very charming.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Maggie: My family, and that includes Sarah because I made her the godmother to my daughter so she would be legally obligated to stay in my life forever.
Sarah: My family, and that includes Maggie because my daughter was born on her birthday so we are bound forever.
