Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Jones, Ph.D..
Hi Sasha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. I’m Sasha Jones, originally from the tri-island nation of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique located in the Caribbean. I hold a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Science and have spent years researching land and water contamination. I found CrossFit through a Groupon deal over a decade ago. I had no idea what I was doing, but I kept coming back. The challenge, the growth, and the community pulled me in. In 2024, I opened CrossFit Green Leaf with the support of a small but dedicated community. We focus on fitness, nutrition, education, and community service. CrossFit Green Leaf reflects everything I value, discipline, purpose, and people. It’s not just a gym, it’s a space for transformation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth doing is ever easy, but I wouldn’t change it. One of the biggest challenges has been growing our membership in a tough economy. Financially, it’s been the hardest part. I didn’t realize it would feel like giving up a few body parts just to keep the lights on. But the community has been incredibly supportive, and that’s what keeps me going. I stay focused on finding creative ways to push through obstacles while making sure our coaches and members feel seen, supported, and valued.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have worn many hats throughout my career. I have worked as a quality assurance technician, high school teacher, adjunct professor, and currently serve as the Scientific Apparatus Engineering Technician at the University of Texas at Arlington. I specialize in air, water, and soil remediation with a focus on creating practical solutions for healthier environments.
Depending on who you ask, I am either known for sitting in a gym all day or for teaching and mentoring students. Both reflect parts of who I am. I am proud of where I am today. Completing my doctorate during the height of the pandemic, when quitting felt like an option, was a major personal milestone. What means the most to me is supporting students, through research, technical help, or just being someone who listens. At the end of the day, we are all human, and I try to lead with that understanding.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you never know what lessons will come from the people you meet or how your past will show up in your future. A great example is Joshua Hillery, who recommended me for this interview. I met him during my first year of teaching when he was just a sophomore in high school. Now, years later, we’re collaborating as professionals. That experience reminds me to treat every connection with care and to always lead with integrity, you never know where the road will circle back.
Since launching CrossFit Green Leaf, I’ve come to understand the challenges small business owners face every day. It’s given me a deeper appreciation for the grind, the sacrifice, and the value of community support. I make it a priority to work with local and small businesses whenever possible because I know how much it means to be seen and supported.
