Sherika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, my name is Sherika Owens owner of Distinctively Vintage Makeup Artistry. My story begin when I started modeling in 2015. I have always loved makeup and was interested in growing in that area. I begin to study and take notes of how each artist crafted. I then begin to practice on myself. One day a close friend Jolie said to me, you should start your own business and I blew it off and thought about it occasionally, but never took it any further. With my nursing background, I was afraid of walking away from something I loved. I had never owned a business and knew nothing of being an entrepreneur. So, for 6 years I slept on my talent out of fear. Well Jolie showed back up again with pressing the thought and even believed in me enough that on 2/21/21 I had the pleasure of doing her entire wedding party. Talk about a jump start to a career. This was the birth of Distinctively Vintage Makeup Artistry. Today, I am thankful at how God designed my circle to help elevate my business and through Him, this is only the beginning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been an easy road. I thought for sure my family would support me or even utilize my services. This is when I learned most business owners are not supported by those closet to them. My overall struggle was gaining the clientele on a consistent basis. To be honest, I still find it hard to keep the flow as I desire monthly.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a self-taught mobile makeup artist (soon to change). I enhance the beauty of my clients that gives them more confidence as they walk into any room. My specialty is in soft glam looks. This is an elegant and classy look that just enhances the beauty. I am most proud of sticking with my craft and not walking away from the gift I was blessed with. I believe I am set apart by how I connect with my clients and most of all aligning myself with my purpose. I have a heart to serve and that is truly a gift. My clients are more than just a face, they are family.
How do you define success?
I define success by how I am aligned with my purpose. In doing so, I am able to build healthy relationships rather than a passing me by in the moment encounter.
