Check Out Thushala Sasankan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thushala Sasankan.

Thushala, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been a creative person all my life. I dabbled in painting, culinary arts, fashion, and photography was one of those outlets initially. Over time I fell in love with capturing life with through my lenses. When I initially explored studying photography at 18, I remember someone telling me that this is a dead art because everyone will have smartphones eventually. I remember believing this and pursuing culinary arts as a potential career. However, after three long years of sabbatical, I bought my first camera- 5D Mark IV and here I am. 😀

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, first of all, coming from a South Asian household, with one brother with a PHD, another with a high-paying job, and other overachievers, I was an anomaly. It took a lot to gain understanding and support from my family members to pursue this career. It has been a bumpy, thorny road full of challenges, and to top it off, we had the unmentionable 2020. There are still some struggles. However, I am hopeful in my abilities to learn and grow my craft.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I specialize in portrait photography and fashion photography. I also love working closely with small businesses and help them with their product shots. I think I am most known for incorporating my culture into my photography. What sets me apart from others is my love for cultivating a diverse culture through my photography. I am really proud of my journey so far. I started off with taking pictures of family members to learn. Now I take pictures of others’ happy moments and moments that make me happy and make a living out of it. Who knew I could do this?

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Consistency is key, learning is your best friend, and self-doubt is your worst enemy.
