Check Out Tori Solis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Solis.

Hi Tori, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Six years ago, in 2019, I decided that I wanted to become a ceramic artist. A couple weeks later, a pottery wheel for sale showed up online, and it was like divine intervention. I picked up that first wheel, and have been throwing every day since. I have also taken several community classes through Dallas College, and the Creative Arts Center of Dallas to further hone my skills. As time goes on, I continue to see my work and craft improve.

Today, I run a successful online pottery shop out of my website bluenosetrading.com, and participate in one or two shows yearly. I am forever thankful to those who support my work and the craft, as I don’t think any other career could bring me such joy and satisfaction.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say for myself, it has been a fairly smooth road. Working with clay and throwing on the potter’s wheel felt like they came naturally to me. I learned the basics quickly, and though I continue to improve, and there is always room for improvement, I have never felt dissatisfied with my work or the process.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I throw and trim my clay on the pottery wheel. I would say that what sets my work apart is my commitment to glaze chemistry, and the formulation of my own, unique glaze recipes. Through my intense study of the chemistry of glazes with Ceramic Materials Workshop, I have worked to create glazes that I hand-mix myself from raw materials, using my own formulas that are designed to work with my clay, and to create the colors and effects I am aiming to achieve in my work.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My best advice for anyone getting started is to practice every day, pursue your own interests, and don’t get sucked into following trends that can water down your own personal sense of style and design choice. Also, make sure you understand the fundamentals of your materials, so you are creating quality work that can stand up to functional use over time.
