Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Davis.
Hi Travis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I never thought I would write a book or even a novel. I’m a late bloomer. I spent almost twenty years in the Army, joining when I was seventeen. When I retired, I was too young to retire and sit around fully, so I decided to reinvent myself, got involved in technology, and found my niche. I worked for companies like EDS, Microsoft, Symantec, BMC, and others. On March 2nd, 2022, I was sitting in a sales meeting. I had an idea that would make a great book. It was one of those moments; you can call it an epiphany. I have had two of them in my life. The other was an idea for a mobile app called Meeting Mapper. I decided to run the idea by someone I know that would give me great feedback, bad or good. He liked the premise, and that day I started to write my first novel, Flames of Deception. I finished it in six weeks. Since then, I have completed my second novel Cobalt – Rise and Fall of the Great Reset, and currently working on my third, yet to have a title.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, it has been smooth. I have a great publisher Defiance Press out of Conroe, Texas. The only struggle was finding the time to write while working full-time. Writing is not a team sport, so it’s a lot of alone time. Luckily, I can write with distractions. I like to listen to music when I write, which causes a lot of editing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I don’t specialize in anything. I’m good at telling stories, but not just in books. I have been in technology sales for years, mainly on the technical pre-sales side. Ensure that the product or solution you’re selling can fix or assist the customer in why they came to you in the first place. When you think of technology, the first thing that comes to your mind is to show them the features and why your competitors suck. But it’s much more than that. You have to weave a story and show them, for example, what happens if they don’t buy from you. Without saying, if you don’t buy from me, you’re doomed. You have to personalize it. What is in it for them? A raise, promotion, bonus, or many just bragging rights. Create a story and make them the main character.
One of the things I’m most proud of and that sets me apart is the ability re-invent myself professionally. I don’t change the person I am; I adapt professionally to the situation I’m presented with. I got laid off recently, so I decided to focus 100% on my writing. When I announced my book to my LinkedIn contacts, someone I have known for over twenty years said, “Travis, how many times have you reinvented yourself? I count four.” It’s more, but how is counting?
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I can talk about current events, history, technology, etc. I’m a people person. I know that sounds dumb, but really. I have traveled to so many places and love to read. When I meet someone and they say they are from Toronto, I say I have been there and provide a tidbit of information. For example, I can say, “Did you know that Yonge Street is the longest street in the world?” My wife says I have never met a stranger. That comes from moving every three years when I was young. My father was in the Air Force, so moving was a regular thing. Listening is important. I’m terrible with names that came from the Army. Everyone had their name on their shirt, which allowed me to concentrate on what they said. I can converse with someone and remember critical details when I see them again. It must be important to them if they mention it, and I should remember it.
