Check Out Valeria Torres-Zamarripa’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valeria Torres-Zamarripa.

Hi Valeria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first picked up a camera around 2016 as a hobby and very quickly fell in love with it. I started taking photos for my middle school yearbook doing sports photography. I was originally on a veterinary medicine track throughout high school but realized that photography was where my heart really is. In 2022 I finally decided to pursue it full time and applied for art school. I got into the University of North Texas (UNT) and I’m pursuing a BFA in studio art with a concentration in photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle was being confident in my art. Coming to UNT I encountered many talented artists within many different mediums and there have been times, even now, where I doubt myself and my abilities. Over time and with the help of my peers and my professors I have become more confident in my art and my skills as a photographer.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is about the exploration of nature and studio photography to capture moments and emotions through the lens of my camera. As a photographer I am inspired by the world around me and I utilize it to develop conceptual ideas that allow me to create impactful and emotional photographs. The contrast between full control in the studio and lack of control of nature allow me to explore and experiment different ways to create visually compelling stories in my art.

Studio photography gives me the freedom to control the environment around me and use it to my advantage to create dynamic works of art while nature photography challenges me to use the environment around me to create compelling compositions both of which create visually compelling stories.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I did 3 and a half years of veterinary medicine in high school and even had an internship lined up before I completely switched gears and decided to pursue photography. I absolutely love animals and I wanted to help them but I was really bad at science and biology.
