Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Justice.
Yolanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Yolanda “Miss Cotton” Justice. Here’s a little bit about me: I am a funky retro explosion of color, with wisdom beyond my years but still possessing an inquisitive childlike spirit. I am also a walking miracle. I wish I could say that I chose all my gifts, but through heartbreaking circumstances, my gifts chose me. I have many hats that I wear. I am a professional event host and comedian that has performed on many platforms and shows to bring life to any gathering. I am also a cosmetologist specializing in helping people with alopecia and other hair dilemmas. This is near and dear to my heart. I had been having lupus since the age of 11 years old. My hair started coming out in patches at the age of 12. After being bullied and ridiculed for having bald patches on my head in school, I learned how to create realistic hair pieces and Wigs. I wore them all the way through high school into adulthood without anyone ever discovering my secret. My experiences gave me the drive to become a hairstylist so that I can help other people with hair issues. Doing hair was just a natural extension of my artistic abilities. I have always loved art in any capacity. I am also a 3D artist, fashion designer, rap artist, actress, motivational speaker, book author, and master herbalist. I have to credit my mother for pushing me into greatness. She knew that I had challenges as a unique autistic child but never treated it as a handicap. Autism was never mentioned until later in my life, but I remember hearing her defend my “weirdness” to others when I was caught staring off or talking to myself. When the whispers started, she would simply say, “Let her be; she’s my special girl.” My mother believed that I could achieve anything so strongly that I believed it as well. I was exceptionally gifted in school and was taking courses at Texas Tech college by the 9th grade. As an introvert, sharing my artistic gifts is my way of communicating with the world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Because of the unique calling in my life as a healer, the road has never been smooth. There has always been opposition since childhood. I survived horrific childhood trauma, still have optimism for the future; I was completely healed from Lupus in 2013. I am currently trying to heal from my former husband taking his own life while lying next to me on November 19, 2021. That event changed my entire world. At this point, I don’t think there is any road left. I am rebuilding a new one as I go along.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Miss Cotton is a whole vibe! I would say that I am definitely an unforgettable experience. I pull you in with my captivating slow country drawl, have you hanging on every mispronounced word, and leave your jaw hanging at the level of transparency through my art. As an entertainer and event host, I have graced many stages, including the Rickey Smiley and friend’s tour. Over the years, my comedic acting skills have been utilized in theater and major movies as well. I think that if you can laugh at your obstacles, then it gives you the power to overcome them. With so many crazy things going on in the world, I enjoy giving people an outlet to enjoy themselves and be stress-free, even if they are stress-free just for a moment. I am most proud of my love for people and compassion for those struggling to find their purpose for being here. Cotton= Concentrating On Trying To Overcome Negativity
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The best thing about Dallas is the diversity here. The last thing I like is the overinflated real estate prices.
