Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Farris.
Hi Zachary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I started out in 2019 doing some videography work for a few clients. Got to a point where I was able to make a living off of it, and it was really cool to see that something you’ve built a skill off of can make you a living like that. There was a point, though where I wanted to do more than just corporate interviews. So, I reached out to a few friends who were in local bands. I asked if I could film their shows, and next thing you know, other bands wanted the same thing. Eventually, it got to a point where a buddy of mine, Erick Ramos, who does crew for Whitechapel and Born Of Osiris, asked me to come to a Dallas show to film. I was absolutely over the moon and said of course! I went, and it completely changed my course of action. Since then, I’ve filmed some other bands like Left To Suffer, Angelmaker, Carcosa, Falsifier, Entheos, A Wake In Providence, Signs Of The Swarm, Cabal, and Between the Buried and Me, Without Erick, and all of the members of the bands, I would not be anywhere near where I am right now. They’ve all put their trust in me and have been in my corner, and I can only hope to continue making content for bands.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a journey for sure. I remember back in 2019, not really having a clue what I was doing. I didn’t know the technical side of how the camera really worked or what button did what. What ISO setting I should be at for this type of lighting. I just knew if I happened to press this button, it made the image look better. If I turn this dial one way, the image looks better. So, I went off of that for a while. Until this year, I had an issue figuring out what I wanted to do professionally. I knew it was going to involve video, but I didn’t know what capacity. So, I thought to myself, what do I want to do more than anything? And it hit me. I want to make movies. Have wanted to do that since like, age 8 or 9. So I got myself into LA Film School, and I’m already loving it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not sure I specialize in anything. Back in 2019, I think I would’ve said something like “cinematic videography,” which just makes me giggle now. But I think something I’m pretty good at is taking, you know, a 25-minute set and turning it into a minute recap of controlled chaos. These bands have completely different styles and ways they brand themselves, and it’s pretty fun to try and match their video to their brand. They might use certain colors, or maybe their new album changed their branding. It comes down to what band is playing, what’s their brand, what song do I use, and how can I make it appeal to their audience. I’m proud of the work I’ve done, and there’s obviously some things I see still and want to change. But I think that’s just the perfectionist in me.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Oh man, there’s too many things! I think the biggest one is the life I’m living. Not everyone gets to wake up and do what I do or go where I go. So, for the breath in my lungs, I’m grateful. I’m thankful for my family and friends. Everyone in my corner who stand with me and cheer me on. It’s because of them I’m able to stand where I am. Something else that makes me happy is my cat. His name is Coconut, and he’s the sweetest I swear.
