Check out SAL’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to SAL.

SAL, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a graduate of arts magnet aka Booker T. Washington for the performing and visual arts in Dallas, which has bred such talents like: Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones…..and now “SAL’S FAMOUS”. I never took art seriously and had ALWAYS had been distracted by girls in high school, till one day(my then favorite art teacher) Mr. Mosely encouraged me to apply for the school of visual arts “SVA” in New York City. I submitted a form and artwork via slides and was accepted, till long story short I didn’t end up going…but moved to NYC (Brooklyn) anyway to live with my sister in 2003. There we tried doing the fashion thing (repping brands and an online store) which really never took off, I returned to Dallas after almost a decade in New York where I attended hair school. I graduated and started assisting in salons (I can do a mean blowout) as well as my own out of home studio salon. I also worked at a bar(s) to make ends meet and always talked about “getting back to painting”. One day all that talk became a reality and I started painting full-time. Ex-girlfriends that believed in my talent/brand would invest in me so I could quit hair and the bar industry and solely focus on my love/craft/and true passion…….painting. It took off from there in the form of commission work and now my own solo show produced by FG111 productions in affiliation with Beam Suntory called “Visual Noise” coming August 4th.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is madness, impulsive, deep, spontaneous…I’m a painter, I take from conversations, film, fashion, and current events and I infuse them into my paintings. “Good artist copy, GREAT ARTIST STEAL”. And I’m the best “cat burglar” around.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Yes, my advice for other artist is: don’t quit, work hard because you might be MORE talented but talent don’t mean sh** without working your butt off, and be better so you can challenge me creatively, so that in turn I CAN BE BETTER. The lesson I wished I learned earlier: struggle is good for you…..without struggle there is no gold at the end of the rainbow. If you’re comfortable then you’re doing it wrong and you’ll never be recognized for your art

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
On Instagram @salcreateart you can support it by BUYING it haha. “Visual Noise” coming soon August 4th 2018
