Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Hernandez.
Sierra, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story as a photographer doesn’t start in high school, or five or ten years ago like most photographers. My story as a photographer started in February of 2017. I’ve always loved photography but never really took it seriously,
I had my first point and shoot camera when I was in middle school but after a year or so it broke and I never picked up another camera until my daughter was a little over a year old. I bought my first DSLR and I expected to be able to take amazing pictures of my little family, like the photos I had fallen in love with when I hired other photographers. But I found out almost immediately I had no idea what I was doing and even though I spent hundreds on a camera my photos looked like photos taken on a phone.
I was so discouraged. After spending as much as I did on my first camera, I decided I had to learn how to use it, had to learn how to edit and I had to learn how to give my images that “wow” factor professional photographers had. So, I researched and learned from other photographers and did whatever I could to perfect my skill. At first it was a hobby I never knew I could turn into a career. Fast-forward to only 18 months later, I am a full-time photographer and I focus on weddings and families, and I absolutely LOVE my job.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a portrait and Wedding photographer. I do everything but newborn, and I do mostly outdoor photos using natural light. I love to capture important moments in people’s life that I know will be passed down to generations for years and years to come. I look back on photos of myself as a child, and of my Uncle and other family members who have passed away and I’m so grateful I have these images to look at. Photography is not just snapping a photo, it provides memories that can last a lifetime! I hope when clients book me they have photos they want to put on canvases and show case in their homes, and photos they print and give to families. I want them to cherish the images forever! My artwork is very natural, with enhanced colors. I edit very naturally, I’m not real sure what I would call my editing but I do consider more on the crisp and clean side.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice for other photographers would be to work hard, and to never stop. That is how I got to where I am today. Photography is not easy, and there are several different styles of editing, you really just have to see what works best for you I wish I would have learned that sooner.
