Today we’d like to introduce you to Akira Piquant
Hi Akira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my baking journey four years ago in June of 2020! There was a lot going on with COVID-19, and I used my time in quarantine to start experimenting with different recipes while learning basic frosting techniques. Being homeschooled with a mom who’s both my teacher and a business owner I had the perfect environment and support to expand my business. She was a big push in helping me turn a hobby into a full-time business. After some trial and error, I started selling cakes to supportive family, friends, and neighbors. After a few months of selling to people I knew, I began receiving inquiries from new clientele who I didn’t know. This marked a turning point for me in becoming a legitimate business. Since then, I’ve continued to grow, expanding to do big projects such as wedding cakes, pop up shops, and bridal shows!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had some smooth roads while also encountering roads that went downhill. I think the biggest struggle I had to overcome was time management along with planning. I had to juggle being a student, an athlete, and working, a challenge I still face today. This taught me to improve my time management skills because I learned I can’t do everything all at once. This also led to me improving my planning skills. Of course, even when I manage my time and have a plan written out, things can still go wrong. Throughout my learning journey there’ve been countless baking mishaps and I’ve had to restart my baking. I’ve also had incidents where I dropped a cake or had a decoration fall and smudge the cake. These mistakes were unfortunate, but I truly learned from them and now know how to avoid them. My late coach had a saying, “Practice makes permanent” and I believe this to be true in all aspects of life, baking included.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Belle of the Bakery?
My baking business is more than just cakes; I also create delightful treats like cupcakes, cookies, and other goodies. However, my cakes are what I am best known for. I collaborate with clients to design custom themes, bringing their ideas and concepts to life. It’s always a proud moment for me when I complete a cake and can step back to admire the finished product. Sometimes, it takes hours of work before I can fully appreciate it. I am deeply grateful for any support towards my business. Following my page or sharing a video on Instagram can make a significant difference. Thank you for helping my business thrive!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Yes! Shoutout to my mother because she has been a big support in my business journey. She helped and still helps me with behind-the-scenes work and business practices. My dad has also been a big help with branding and marketing. Both my parents have given me a wealth of knowledge to help my business grow. Another shoutout goes to my four-year-old sister, who is always an eager taste-tester for my desserts.
