Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda McCoy.
Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in real estate in 2016 because I genuinely wanted to help people. I also came into the industry with a background that made homes feel familiar to me. I have a degree in architecture from Texas A&M and grew up around construction, so I’ve always been interested in how homes are designed, built, and lived in.
Over the years, the business grew through relationships, referrals, and being involved in the community. I never wanted real estate to feel overly sales-driven. For me, it has always been about giving people good information, being honest with them, and helping them make the decision that is right for them.
Matt’s path into real estate was different. He spent years in the corporate world before deciding in 2025 to make a career change and join me in the business. He also grew up building things and has always been very hands-on, so he brings a practical perspective to homes and properties that complements my design and architecture background really well.
Once Matt joined me, The McCoy Group really started to feel like something we were building together. We bring different strengths to the business, and I think that has been a big part of why working together has gone so well.
We’re also raising our three boys in Rockwall, so this community is much more than just the area where we work. It’s home. Our church, our friends, our kids’ activities, and so much of our everyday life are here.
Today, we work with buyers and sellers throughout Rockwall County and the surrounding area, but we’ve tried to keep the business very personal as it has grown. We still want clients to feel like they are working directly with us and getting advice from people who genuinely care about the outcome.
Looking back, I don’t think either of us would have predicted exactly where the business would be today. What started with me wanting to help people has grown into something we now get to build together, and that has probably been the most rewarding part of it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges for us is simply balancing everything. We’re raising a family while running a business that doesn’t really operate on a 9-to-5 schedule. Real estate happens in the evenings, on weekends, during vacations, and sometimes right in the middle of family dinner. We’re also very involved in our church. We serve as youth group leaders, Matt is a deacon, and once a year we participate in mission work. Those things are all really important to us, so a lot of our life is about figuring out how to be present for our kids, our clients, our church, and each other.
We definitely don’t have that balance figured out perfectly, but we’ve learned to work together and accept that some seasons are going to be busier than others. There are days when it feels like we’re juggling everything at once.
The financial side of a commission-based business can also be challenging, especially when you have a family, kids at home, and college expenses. Income can vary a lot from month to month, and a transaction you’re counting on can be delayed or fall apart for reasons completely outside your control. That uncertainty takes some getting used to.
The market itself has also been difficult at times. Buyers and sellers are dealing with affordability concerns, changing interest rates, higher costs, and uncertainty about what comes next. Our job is to stay steady through that and help our clients make good decisions even when there isn’t always a clear or easy answer.
And then there are the transactions that are just hard. Inspections uncover problems, financing changes, appraisals come in low, negotiations get complicated, and sometimes things happen that no one could have predicted. Those experiences can be stressful, but they’ve also made us better at communicating, problem solving, and staying calm when things don’t go according to plan.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The McCoy Group, Paragon REALTORS®?
We’re The McCoy Group, a husband-and-wife real estate team based in Rockwall, Texas, serving buyers and sellers throughout Rockwall County and the surrounding North Texas area. We work in residential real estate, and our clients range from first-time buyers and families relocating to the area to people selling longtime homes, buying acreage, building new construction, or looking for something a little more unique.
What probably sets us apart most is how personal and hands-on we are. We’re not trying to build the biggest team or hand clients off from person to person. When someone works with us, they work with us. We answer the phone, show the houses, handle the negotiations, have the difficult conversations, and stay involved from beginning to end.
Sometimes being hands-on goes beyond what people might traditionally think of as a Realtor’s job. We’ve helped clients paint, move things around before showings, meet vendors at a property, and run over when something unexpected happens. Real estate can get messy and stressful, and we’ve always felt like if we can help solve a problem, we should.
Local knowledge is also a big part of what we do. Rockwall is where we live and raise our family, so we know the area in a way that goes beyond market statistics. We understand the neighborhoods, schools, new construction, older homes, acreage properties, lake communities, taxes, special districts, and a lot of the little differences that can really matter when someone is deciding where to live.
What we’re most proud of brand-wise is that The McCoy Group still feels like us. We’ve worked hard to build something professional and recognizable, but we never wanted it to feel overly polished or sales-driven. We want people to feel comfortable calling us, asking questions, and knowing they’re going to get a real answer.
We’re also very honest with our clients, even when the easiest answer would be to just move forward with a transaction. If we think a house is overpriced, has issues that could become a problem, or just isn’t the right fit, we’ll say that. If a seller needs to hear something difficult about price or condition, we’ll say that too. We would rather build trust over time than push someone into a decision just to get to a closing.
At the end of the day, we want people to know that we take the work seriously, but we don’t take a sales-first approach to it. We want our clients to feel informed, supported, and confident in the decisions they make. That’s really the foundation of The McCoy Group and the kind of business we want to keep building.
Any big plans?
For the future, we want to keep growing, but we want to do it in a way that still feels personal and connected to who we are. We’re not interested in building a huge team just for the sake of being bigger. We would love for The McCoy Group to eventually become more of a family brand, where we can bring in younger family members or close friends, teach them the business, and give them an opportunity to build something alongside us.
We’ve also talked about eventually opening our own brokerage. That would give us more control over how we grow and allow us to create the kind of culture and business we would want to be part of ourselves.
Personally, one of my biggest dreams is to buy and renovate older and historic homes. I love homes with character and history, and I would love to be able to restore them in a way that makes them functional for today while preserving what makes them special. Even more than that, I like the idea of helping keep some of those homes attainable so another generation has the opportunity to own them and enjoy them.
We also want to continue growing the real estate side of the business, investing in properties ourselves, and creating more educational resources for buyers and sellers. But whatever growth looks like, we want to make sure The McCoy Group stays personal, hands-on, and rooted in relationships.
If we can build something that our family can be proud of, create opportunities for people we care about, preserve some great old homes along the way, and help more people experience homeownership, that would feel like a pretty meaningful next chapter for us.
