Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Pratt
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Animals have always been a huge part of my life. From riding in High School and working with dogs when I could, to learning how to train and helping a rescue in College, all the way to today. I knew I was meant to work with animals, but it was not until I personally became affected by my disabilities that the idea of the service dog world became my haven. After training Scout to be my personal service dog, and working with other Service Dog organizations I found a true passion in the dog world. That passion grew into a business that will be celebrating 10 years in 2025! Helping those find the path to freedom with a service dog is my calling, and I love every minute I get to see these teams grow and thrive.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Training service dogs comes with many challenges. At the end of the day I am training the people more than the dog. Teaching dogs is and always will be the easiest part of the job. Teaching handlers…. that was and still can be the tricky part. Finding new ways to communicate and let things not bother you are major when working with disabled clients. There are many in this world who want to see you fail, and many who will take small mistakes and make them into big problems. The balance between fighting and letting things blow over is real, and learning how not to be a pushover but also not taking everything so harshly is a balancing act many in the dog world have had to learn.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Scout’s Legacy Service Dogs?
Scout’s Legacy Service Dogs is a company that helps train service dogs for those who have disabilities. We specialize in Owner Training, but do have the occasional fully trained and started dogs. We work with reputable breeders and rescues for the dogs in our program, as well as breed Golden Retrievers for the job. Service Dogs require a lot of training to be able to do the job we ask of them, and we are here for all of it. Scout’s Legacy is about honesty and integrity and we will not pass a dog off as a service dog who is not safe to other people or animals. We are so proud of our breeding program of wonderful Golden Retrievers who have successfully produced many service dogs for those who need them. 10 years ago this was a dream, today it is a reality. So happy to have this wonderful company and people in it!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
The biggest support Scout’s Legacy has is Veronique Clarke! Without her operations would not run as smoothly. She is the rock when we need it, the voice of reason, and the best person anyone could ask for to be on their side. Because of her Scout’s Legacy is thriving.
