Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Dorsey.
Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was 21, I wanted to become a realtor. If I’m honest, I don’t know why God laid this desire on my heart, especially because I didn’t understand anything about Real Estate. It’d be nice to say I went after it immediately, but I didn’t. I worked for a city, where I was under-appreciated and I was fired on a day I volunteered to be at work for no pay. That job made me who I am today though… I took my “time off” package that I didn’t use and paid for Real Estate school. It took me a year to be courageous enough to even finish the 6-week program and another year for me to go full-time and take the entrepreneur route. Business was honestly great from the day I walked out the door, but I think God had a bigger plan for me beyond me building my business as a solo agent. After 5 years into this journey, 3 women approached me about joining me and asked if I could create a team for them, they didn’t know the other had asked, they didn’t even all know each other. Ha! the irony, they all approached me back-to-back. I never even thought about starting a team, but I know God puts you in places and places people on your path, to help guide you. I thank my original 3 for pushing me to start this team, but God gets all the credit for bringing them. Dorsey DFW Group has been a team for 2 years now and I have 6 agents. We serve all of Dallas, but what’s even better is we are like sisters. We support each other. I know that this journey is just getting started, but I’m learning to take it all in and appreciate it, day by day.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth? What is that? I don’t think anything about entrepreneurship is created to be smooth. Especially at this phase. When my “sisters” first approached me, I looked each of them in their face and told them “I have no idea what I’m doing, you’re my guinea pigs and if you trust me, I will figure it out.” It took us a year for me to figure it out how I could even be an asset to them. Running a team cost money, if I’m honest, I was spending the money I was making to support us, which was taking away from my household. It would be overwhelming and sometimes even discouraging. I would cry to myself because I was not sure I was making the right decision, but I just kept pushing forward and one day it clicked. I could see the benefits and how I was not only helping them grow how we were no longer functioning off of my money alone. Some days I’d be so drained helping my clients and all 6 ladies on my team. We have an office space and there was one month I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay for it… and then boom, I got paid from a deal. For me, it can be emotional or scary, but I think you have remind yourself of the bigger picture. It took time for me to create the structure needed to not just stay afloat, but to soar.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a Real Estate Team, with an office located in Dallas and we serve all of DFW. Even though we are all women, what sets us apart is how diversified we are. We serve Spanish-speaking clients, luxury clients, and tons of relocation clients. Majority of us are natives of DFW and are familiar with all the different areas of Dallas. Our business is built on natural and nurtured leads and we share our journey on YouTube. Working with us is like house shopping with a family friend, your best interest is always our number 1 priority. I’m proud of how we make this process seamless and how when a client gets one of us, we celebrate their journey as a team together. I think it’s important to understand that we understand this is huge investment, we have created processes, that show how much we care. The best part is, when you close a deal with us, that’s only the beginning of our relationship. We don’t end there, we forever throw you parties, come to family events, celebrate your birthday, we are real-life “besties.”
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My best friend is my google calendar. I love all kind of podcast, Tom Ferry for Realtors, I have a podcast, Business 101 the Shit, they don’t teach you, and I love Know for Sure because they address mental health as far as books, “More Than Enough” by Elaine Welteroth, “We Should All Be Millionaires” By Rachel Rodgers, “Bamboozled my Jesus” by Yvonne Orji… I love to read other people’s journey. I think it’s refreshing, to hear there is no straight and narrow path and sometimes, you have to go off-road, but you still get there.
