Today we’d like to introduce you to Baylore Walker.
Hi Baylore, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before opening Untitled Fitness Lab, I started as a student at Tyler Junior College where I tore my ACL playing football. After an extensive rehabilitation process, I tore my ACL again at a university of north Texas football camp. From there I decided I would start figuring out, and researching how to rehab myself back to good health. This process led me down a road to physical therapy and the study of exercise science, which also led me to getting my personal training certification from the American Council on exercise (ACE). From there I applied and was accepted into University of Texas in Arlington, where I studied exercise science and business management as a minor, in hopes of being a physical therapist, while working at 24-hour fitness part-time. During that process I was able to obtain, a part-time job at a physical therapy technician as a PT rehabilitation technician, while also interning at TMI sports in Arlington under a great physical therapist by the name of, Tom Kirsch. While I managed to train almost full time working in my mother’s garage, which was 320 ft.².
After going through my undergraduate program, and graduating in 2018, I trained for another year out of my mother’s garage and felt as it was time to take a leap of faith in start looking for spaces to open a training facility. Around mid-November 2019, a long-time friend contacted me and asked if I needed help opening a gym. I had trust that the partnership will work out given the fact I had known this person for so long, and in my belief, the credibility of this person would open another marketing Avenue two entice more professional, collegiate, and youth athletes to train in a newfound facility in the DFW metroplex.
I accepted the offer and the help of my colleague. Together we managed to match funds, and assets to create what is known today as Untitled Fitness Lab.
However, no one could have foreseen a pandemic in the near future at the beginning of 2020, when the gym was established. Our first thought was, “how are we going to make it?“, but to our surprise when a lot of the commercial gyms closed down, we gained more interest than we expected. We could not foresee that the demand for smaller-boutique gym space would be the perfect solution for a pandemic (Or at least in our case). From that point, we needed more coaches, because the inquiries we were getting began to snowball at an exponential rate.
Our first year we’re able to expand our space another 2700 ft.², to make the gym a 7000+ square-foot training facility, that holds a basketball court, recovery room, break room, new lobby, massage therapy room, evaluation room, and therapy clinic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After opening the gym in 2020, we encountered some legal setbacks that needed to be taken care of in regards to our name being trademarked.
After dumping all my savings and assets into the business, this put me at a very unstable financial position. However, with the support of my family and friends, and mostly God I was able to stay focused, keep climbing, and growing along with the business to recoup a normal lifestyle.
