Community Highlights: Meet Bermarie Winston of Hey There, Cupcake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bermarie Winston.

Hi Bermarie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hey there! I’m Bermarie, owner of Hey There, Cupcake, wife and mommy. My husband and I met in California, fell in love, and moved to Texas to start a new life. We had our first child and life was perfect. Sooner than we anticipated, we found out we were expecting our second child – a baby boy! We were thrilled, but it was a bit more difficult to adjust to a new life with two kids as opposed to one. I struggled to figure out a balance between being a mom and being an individual.

Quarantining in 2020 was the biggest blessing in disguise. It was during this time that I decided I wanted – and needed – to do something for myself. I have always had a love of baking and decorating cupcakes, so I chose to spend this time practicing the craft. My husband’s birthday cake in April 2020 was the first cake I’ve ever decorated, and I had no idea it would be far from the last! I chose the name “Hey There, Cupcake” as a nod to my husband. “Cupcake” is my super dorky – totally embarrassing nickname I refer to him as and always sign my notes with a “love you, cupcake.” He is the biggest reason I gained the courage to start my business and the name is as “us” as it gets. Since starting, I have expanded to offering cakes, macarons, brownies, and cookies. Aside from making delicious treats, my hope is to one day be able to start a monthly networking meet-up for women in business. I’ve experienced firsthand how life-changing it can be when you pursue a dream of yours and I would love to help other women who are wanting to do the same. Having just one person in your corner could make all the difference and if I could be that one person for someone, I will consider it a success.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have to admit, I have been very blessed throughout this journey. The biggest challenge for me has just been finding a balance between being a business owner and being a mommy. My kids are my greatest joy and of course, they are my priority. So I do sometimes have to set boundaries and maybe set a limit of how many orders I will take this week to make sure I am spending enough time with them. It’s a struggle that moms in any industry deal with, but becoming my own boss has made me really learn the importance of finding that rhythm. It’s easy to get carried away with my to-do lists and marketing and designing my website, but I’m forced to discipline myself and stick to a schedule for the sake of my family. It’s a good life lesson.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
