Today we’d like to introduce you to Bevan Makaka.
Hi Bevan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born in a family of 2, I grew up in the poor parts of Africa, Mabvuku Zimbabwe, at a tender age of 10 I became eager/ambitious for a better tomorrow. Since relocating to the US at age 15 my life story is made up of series of events that I am proud of, as I cherish all moments in my life because they have directly and indirectly made an impact in my life. I am most proud and excited about accomplishing realistic goals and constantly looking for ways to push beyond my last achievement and onto the next one both in my business and philanthropic spheres, last but not least I am most proud about the impact that we are making as Bevan and Megan Foundation in African communities to enhance food and nutrition security and educational provision to low-income families. To be honest I got where I am by the grace of God enveloped by consistency and persistency and a good network of individuals that inspired me to dream more and do more. Networking in business is one of the best resources for career development and professional success. A good network can provide investment opportunities, possibilities for advancement, and opportunities for personal improvement, Networking allows you access to opportunities you might not be able to find on your own. I want the World to know that I was here! My dream is to create a world that is inclusive, one that embraces everyone regardless of skin color or background that is why I am committing my time and resources to fight hunger crisis in Africa
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been tough and rough. The main problem in my line of work is dealing with unscrupulous people. Most times after fulfilling your side of the contract, you’re not paid on time or not paid at all which cripples your ability to service and maintain your fleet. Also, the competition is cutthroat which knocks prices down and eats into your profit margin. So, to remain afloat and mitigate some of these challenges, you have to be very strategic in your approach to business. Other problems have to do with huge delays at border posts, bureaucratic bottlenecks at offloading bays, and breakdowns in remote places…
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
An IT guru who specializes in Data Engineering and Business Analytics, a Serial Entrepreneur, and a Philanthropist who sits on the executive board of Xcelerate Enterprises. Our company is divided into three main wings, Xcelerate Trucking, Xcelerate Mining, and Xcelerate Entertainment. Xcelerate Trucking caters for the transport and logistics business where we move bulk fuel loads across the Southern Africa region mainly in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, and South Africa.
Xcelerate Mining is into gold and chrome mining along the Great Dyke area of Zimbabwe. Xcelerate Entertainment, which I am very passionate about is involved in promoting the Music and Arts industry, mainly in Zimbabwe. We focus on helping artists record their music, make videos and we promote shows in the diaspora mainly United States and United Kingdom. This we do to connect Africans living in the Diaspora with their roots. As a Christian, I am obviously tilted more towards Gospel music, but we promote secular music as well and I have a lot of good friends there.
I would say what sets us apart is our passion to exceed the expectations of our clients. While all business pursues profit, we try to do it in a manner that does not compromise our integrity. As an IT guy, I also try to ensure that we harness technology to enhance our visibility as a brand.
What matters most to you? Why?
I am a philanthropist at heart. This probably emanates from my being raised in the ghetto where I witnessed so many challenges, mostly amongst the poor. My parents raised me to believe in hunhu/ubuntu which simply means I am because you are. I value personal achievements but not in isolation, so I try to help as many folks as I can. With the little I get, I send as many kids as I can to school in rural areas, feed the orphan and the widow in different places in Zimbabwe as well. Like I already mentioned above, I am passionate about the arts and do support artists, and will continue to do so well into the foreseeable future. As a matter of fact, Xcelerate Entertainment is already working on something really good for those in the States mainly in Dallas TX later on this year
