Community Highlights: Meet Brigitte Mena of Mena Music Lessons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Mena.

Brigitte Mena

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As an undergraduate, I double majored in music & psychology, and went on to earn my Masters in Education. During my time at SMU, I started teaching private lessons while I was trying to figure out what I ultimately wanted to pursue in the music field. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed teaching, so after graduating, I continued taking on more students while performing and working full time as a professional musician. Over time, I saw my music teaching business expand and the need for music education that was fun, creative, and age appropriate. I received frequent inquiries by parents looking for a gentler, more encouraging teaching style — one that would help their children stay motivated rather than give up on learning an instrument. In a high-pressure, achievement-focused society, I believe music should be a source of joy, not stress.

This is why I founded Mena Music Lessons, to provide engaging, hands-on, personalized music education for students of all ages and experience levels. As the owner and instructor, I teach private piano, voice, and guitar lessons while also managing the day-to-day operations of the studio.

I oversee all aspects of the business, including teaching private lessons, managing instructors, handling administrative operations, and coordinating student scheduling. I also focus on studio growth through client outreach, marketing strategy, and maintaining our online presence across social media and our website. I’m passionate about building a welcoming studio environment where students feel motivated, supported, and inspired to grow musically.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always had the entrepreneurial heart, but it definitely took some time to learn how to efficiently run a business. One of the hard parts was learning how to implement fair and effective policies. With each year, I’d take a step back and think about what worked and what didn’t. There’s trial and error that comes with trying out new policies, but it’s always been my goal to be fair to everyone involved – teachers, parents, students, and myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mena Music Lessons?
Mena Music Lessons is a Dallas-based music studio that provides private music lessons in the comfort of your home. We specialize in voice, piano, guitar, and ukulele lessons ages 3 and up. While lessons stem from a classical approach, students are free and encouraged to explore any style that interests them including pop, jazz, country, musical theatre, etc. We acknowledge that each student learns differently and make sure that each lesson is guided with the student’s unique goals, interests, and learning style in mind.

Our lessons are rooted in the “whole child” approach in which the social and emotional side of learning become valuable tools in a well rounded music education. By giving students choices in their learning, we support positive behavior, boost motivation, and strengthen relationships. We also incorporate visual and enrichment activities—such as songwriting and musical games—to keep lessons interactive and enjoyable.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me has never been about money, fame, or glam, but instead about loving and serving others well, investing in meaningful relationships, and finding joy while enduring life’s hardships. Simply put, I think this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson sums up success beautifully – “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”
