Today we’d like to introduce you to Chesley Griffin Jr.
Hi Chesley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began at 18, working in protection at a high-rise warehouse while simultaneously managing personal security gigs for my younger brother’s events. In 2011, I started my first DBA, not in protection, but in the clothing and music industry. Despite that, I continued to build my protection experience, working at places like Boomer Jack’s and providing security for organizations such as the Nation of Islam. It was my work with a mentor, Syed, that truly deepened my understanding of the business. Watching him manage employees and run operations gave me valuable insight into the backend of the security industry. Over time, I became his right-hand man, gaining knowledge and expertise that would help me launch my own business.
As I continued running gigs and booking myself, clients began requesting I book other security personnel, which led to rapid growth. By 2016, my business was thriving, primarily working with the African community and then expanding into the Indian community. I officially formed my LLC in May 2019 and soon followed up by obtaining my security company license and training school license in 2020. Becoming a licensed instructor and investing in my own embroidery machine allowed me to cut costs and grow into a new business category.
Over the years, I’ve built a solid foundation, working closely with a CPA and a talented bookkeeper. I also established an exceptional office manager to support operations. Branding and marketing have always been a priority for me, as I knew standing out was key. Powerful Blessed Champions was born in my childhood, grew into a business in my teenage years, and became a legitimate corporation as I matured into adulthood.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has definitely been a learning curve, especially when it comes to managing finances and scaling the business. While generating revenue came relatively easy in the beginning, the real challenge was learning how to properly manage that money—allocating funds effectively, putting the right people in place, and ensuring everything ran smoothly. One of the hardest lessons was understanding how to separate business and personal finances, and how not to rely on debit for everything. I had to learn the hard way about business credit, budgeting, and avoiding frivolous spending. As an entrepreneur using my own funds, every decision matters—if I made a mistake, it could set me back for months. There were many sleepless nights, tough decisions, and times of uncertainty. There were no investors to fall back on, so I had to rely entirely on myself to make it work. These challenges were difficult, but they taught me invaluable lessons that have been key to my growth and success.
