Community Highlights: Meet Craig Spillman of Craig W. Spillman, Ph.D., P.C, dba Counseling Institue of Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Spillman.

Hi Craig, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As an undergraduate I discerned a vocation that would include helping people and after deliberation and consultation with advisors I choice to go into the field healthcare and specifically mental healthcare. Knowing at the time, that additional education would be required I sought an MA in Educational Psychology followed by a Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of North Texas. After internship and passing both the board I was licensed to practice independently and began the Counseling Institute of Irving. Over the years I have seen countless paitients for individual therapy, couples and marriage counseling and family therapy. Hosting LPC and LMFT associates has become a standard of the office and we offer services to patients with insurance, Medicare, and on a sliding fee basis. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay for services and we have an active intern program where people from all walk of life are welcome. Our website describes our philosophy of care and we provide consistent, compassionate and psychologically appropriate mental health care to our patients.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Struggles over the years are mostly related to insurance carriers and their reimbursement rates. Unlike other industries, we are unable to charge a fee that we set but rather depend on each insurance carrier to set a rate based on my credentials and our location in Dallas County. Many of our referrals come from other healthcare providers and these physicians rely on our coordination of care to be sure that patients receive the best type of psychotherapy in conjunction with any medications they are prescribed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Mental health care is crucial for living a complete and happy life. There are obstacles and thinking issues that can interfere with an individuals choices and our office is trained in helping people dicepher the best choices they can make given their background and abilities. We strongly believe in the dignity of all people. We emphasize a compassionate, thoughtful and engaged interaction between patient and counselor while recognizing the difference people bring to their session. High quality care that focuses on behavioral change and insight are combined to bring the best possible outcoe for our patients. We truly care, are invested and use Adlerian principle to conceptualize and apply treatment plans that individualized to every patient we meet. Our office has become a long term community based private practice and is widely accepted as a standard bearer for mental health care in our community.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Buddhist principles of calmness, peace and the ability to control our minds through meditation are helpful. There is no religious preference as meditation is a global concept that allows a person to focus on one item to the exlusion of all else and by doing so calming the mind and taking control over thoughts and feelings. Many apps assist people in their meditation journey and guided imagery can be an amazing tool leading toward self-guided meditation. Always remembering that medication is concentrated thought….so if you are peeling a potatoe, you do nothing else but peel the potatoe….the act peeling the potatoe is to the exclusion of all else…..at it’s essence that is meditation.
