Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Asije
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an award-winning textile designer with multiple years of experience as an entrepreneur. I started my career in the bank and went to start a textile company that empowered over 10,000 women in Africa. It was in running that company I saw how challenging it was for African artisans to access retail stores in the US, and thats’s how Craftmerce started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As CEO of Craftmerce, the road has been far from smooth. One of our biggest challenges has been navigating the complexities of scaling a marketplace that connects African artisans with global buyers. Ensuring consistent product quality while maintaining fair trade practices has been a balancing act. Also, building trust with artisans and educating them on digital commerce was more difficult than anticipated. We’ve also faced logistical hurdles in shipping across borders, alongside overcoming investor skepticism about the viability of our business model. However, each challenge has strengthened our resolve and refined our approach to growth and impact.
As you know, we’re big fans of Craftmerce Inc . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Craftmerce is a digital marketplace connecting African artisans with global buyers. We specialize in curating authentic, handmade products, showcasing the richness of African craftsmanship while promoting sustainable and ethical trade practices. What sets us apart is our deep commitment to empowering artisans by providing them access to international markets, fair compensation, and educational resources. We’re most proud of our impact—elevating communities by driving economic growth through their art. Our readers should know that Craftmerce is not just about selling products; it’s about creating lasting connections and preserving cultural heritage through every handcrafted item we offer.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was curious, creative, and driven. I had a passion for problem-solving and an entrepreneurial spirit, always looking for ways to create or improve something. I loved learning about different cultures, which fueled my interest in global connections. My determination and curiosity have shaped my leadership style today.
