Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Connelly.
Hi Devin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My involvement with the video production industry began with an internship I paid to do through a program that stuck me in a partner studio. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn much from that but did meet someone who introduced me to DSLR video, which was coming into its prime at the time. After that ran its course, I knew my options to were to quit, since I still wasn’t very hirable at the time, or go into business on my own. Because DSLRs were affordable compared to traditional equipment, I chose the later and have since built Ethos Media from a long series of trials, errors, learning from mistakes, and gradually improving in both equipment and capability.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Video production is very easy to screw up, especially when you hold yourself to professional standards. Capturing and editing quality audio was also a challenge for me for the first few years, as was getting quality shots without the proper equipment. So much of our industry depends on having proper equipment in the fundamental levels including obviously the camera but also lighting, audio, editing, and rigging equipment.
Struggles that revealed themselves during or after shoots were met with long hours “fixing it in post”. Marketing is also very much a challenge that I only overcame after being shown a way to get my website Google-listed, something I credit as the silver bullet that allowed my business to grow into sustainable income for myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ethos Media?
Ethos Media has produced almost every type of video under the sun at this point, from corporate to creative projects. However, our main focus going forward is event coverage and live streaming, both of which we are very well equipped to handle, whether it be producing highlight/sizzle reels or capturing formal presentations/activities.
We have some of the latest in Blackmagic Design camera and ATEM switcher tech, a setup that’s great for event coverage but also in studio settings as well. Live streaming is a very easy process with this equipment, which can create TV-broadcast quality with the inclusion of on-screen graphics and playback of pre-recorded content.
Furthermore, we’ve partnered with other production houses to provide a wide range of event AV equipment in addition to our video infrastructure, so that we can be a turnkey solution for just about any type of event.
Lastly, yet another partnership we’ve made with an online marketing company makes it so that clients who wish to maximize coverage of their video content online can do so with proven strategies, some of which we employ ourselves to find new clients.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I was introduced to the concept of DSLR filmmaking by Daniel Millican of Serendipitous Films, another video production company in the DFW area. He gave me my first real production experience and showed me that consumer-grade cameras were capable of producing remarkable imaging. It was because of this that I was able to get my first setup for making videos many years ago.
