Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Christian Henry.
Hi Dr. Christian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, my journey really starts in East Texas. I was born and raised there as a country girl and the daughter of a young, married, God-fearing couple. Growing up, I knew emotional and foundational wealth when it came to faith, family, and love, but financial wealth was something far out of reach. What’s powerful, though, is that I didn’t realize the financial barriers my parents faced until I was much older, because they made sure my big brother and I never went without.
My parents instilled in us the power of prayer and the importance of a strong relationship with God, which became the foundation that carried me through every stage of life. With that guidance, and while also being a deacon’s daughter, I knew I wanted to give back to them through my educational journey.
Due to our close family unit, M.O.S.H. Counseling Services was founded in 2024 in honor of my paternal grandmother, Mary Odessa Sampson Henry (M.O.S.H.) aka “Nana.” Before she passed away from breast cancer in 2006, she made me promise to become a doctor and carry on a legacy of service in our family. I was only in 6th grade when we had this conversation so I was thinkin, “Doctor, I don’t like germs!” (laughs). In 2023, I fulfilled that promise and earned my doctorate at just 29 years old, becoming the first Black doctor under the age of 30 originally from Commerce that graduated from East Texas A&M University, and I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout.
Creating M.O.S.H. was my way of weaving all of that together: my family’s sacrifices, my grandmother’s promise, and my own passion to help others. Just like Nana, I wanted to serve people, especially those who may feel unseen or unheard. So this practice isn’t just a business for me, it’s a legacy, a ministry, and a way to give back to the community that raised me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? Not at all (laughs). Honestly, my 20s were full of late nights studying, financial struggles from underpaid internships, heartbreaks, and even moments where I questioned if I was on the right path. I’d catch myself comparing my life to peers who were getting married or starting families while I was just grinding toward my career.
And when I started M.O.S.H. Counseling Services, my biggest thought was, “How am I going to do this without the money?” But with faith, family, and a lot of perseverance, it came together, and now the practice is continuing to grow. Looking back, the road wasn’t smooth, but it was worth every speed bump.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about M.O.S.H. Counseling Services ?
At M.O.S.H. Counseling Services, we specialize in trauma, student-athlete mental health, substance abuse counseling, grief and loss, reentry and criminal justice support, Christian and spiritual counseling, as well as self-exploration and identity counseling to name a few. We’re known for our family-centered approach to mental health. My practice is named after my Nana, and my dad serves as our business manager while my uncle is our I.T. support, so truly, family is at the heart of everything we do. We treat everyone who comes to us like family, and one of our guiding rules is to exude unconditional kindness, because I believe a simple smile can begin to heal hearts.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is honoring my Nana’s legacy. I truly feel like she would be smiling from ear to ear knowing her name and spirit lives on through this practice. Our brand is also deeply tied to who I am. As a proud woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the pink and green in our logo comes directly from the importance of my sisterhood. In a way, M.O.S.H. Counseling Services is the perfect blend of all my loves: God first as the foundation, family, mental health, and serving all humankind as an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman.
What I want readers to know is this: Please come! We welcome you with open arms, kind hearts, and nonjudgmental minds. We are 100% virtual and accessible throughout Texas, we accept multiple insurances, and we even offer free 15-minute consultations so clients can make sure their counselor is the right fit for them. At the end of the day, our mission is simple—love, family, and healing for all.
What makes you happy?
Living in my purpose truly makes me happy. For me, that means serving as an example that you can go through storms and still come out with that rain nurturing the seed within you, producing fruit in your life. I’m not perfect. I’ve faced my own mental health struggles, but my life itself is my testimony. I want people to know that if you start by believing you can, then you will. I have learned that people fight harder when they know that someone is going through it with them. I want to be that person for my clients.
On a lighter note, I’m a big fan of gummy bears, and I absolutely love being a “boy auntie” to my nephews. The time spent with them keeps me grounded and laughing, but man they are rough (laughs)! I also find joy in serving my community and teaching my graduate students as a professor. Also being a country girl at heart, I love fishing, riding horses, and cooking. It’s part of what keeps me balanced.
