Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Josh.
Hi Dr. Josh, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am from Puerto Rico and I was raised in an environment with limited resources. Since I was a little kid, I have always loved animals and helping them, so I always said I was going to be a veterinarian. Even though I did not have any counselor, I did extensive research on how to become a veterinarian and after many years of hard work, I finally went to University of Missouri to finish my doctoral degree. Once I graduated, I practiced in Las Vegas, San Diego, and then in Dallas. I opened my own hospital from scratch in 2019 in Addison, TX, where we have already received “Best Vet in DFW” awards. I am very proud to be able to offer outstanding medical care to patients in the DFW area, as well as a white glove treatment to our amazing clientele.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Achieving major goals in life usually involves a rocky path. For me to become a doctor, I would say one of my biggest challenges was not knowing English in the beginning and moving to the United States to complete a doctoral degree without knowing well the language or the culture. Another big challenge for me was coming from a low-income background and being part of an ethnic minority. Lastly, being openly gay has also presented challenges, but I am very proud of who I am and where I come from and I would not change any of the obstacles or struggles I have faced to get to where I am in life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Isla Veterinary Boutique Hospital, we focus on attention to detail and our commitment to excellence. Our goal is to make sure that our patients enjoy state-of-art healthcare while our clients enjoy thorough and sound advice. We also have a fear-free based approach that we combine with open communication to ensure nothing is missed while having the pet’s best interest in mind. We aim to revolutionize the way veterinary medicine is practiced and to change lives!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to someone that may be starting out is to seek advice from someone that has gone down the same path. Doing this alone can be very challenging! I would also advice to not let curveballs bring the mood down and bring defeat, as these should only test our passion and devotion to making goals become a reality.
