Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Mary Davis Cross, D.C..
Hi Dr. Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually started my journey as an athlete. Volleyball was my world — I was a hitter, constantly chasing the next level, pushing to get better. What I *didn’t* take seriously was recovery… until my body forced me to.
During my senior year of high school, right when I was pursuing my dream of playing in college, I tore my labrum and a few rotator cuff tendons in my right shoulder. Overnight, everything I’d worked for since sixth grade felt like it disappeared. After surgery, I didn’t bounce back the way I hoped. I lost my power, my strength, and honestly, a lot of my confidence. I couldn’t play volleyball, work out, or even do simple daily tasks like brushing my teeth or hair without pain, weakness, and overwhelming fatigue in my arm.
I spent over a year in traditional therapy and went through rounds of cortisone shots, but nothing truly changed. I knew I needed to try something different — so I started researching what else was out there. That’s when I found a sports chiropractor. And within six sessions, everything shifted. I regained strength, mobility, range of motion, and most importantly, the ability to take care of myself and feel like *me* again.
That experience changed the entire trajectory of my life. I knew I wanted to provide that same level of hope, support, and transformation for other people — especially those who feel like they’ve tried everything and are still in pain.
That’s what led me to chiropractic, and why I’m so passionate about the work I do today. My goal is to help people move, feel, and live better — so they can get back to the things they love, just like I did.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. Like most people in healthcare, there were chapters that challenged me both personally and professionally. After my mom passed, I went through a period where my passion for the profession felt different — it was hard to keep pushing forward when the person who supported me most wasn’t here to see it. On top of that, working in a variety of clinics early in my career eventually led to burnout. I was pouring so much into my patients, but the environments weren’t always aligned with the type of care I believed in.
But those seasons taught me a lot. They showed me what kind of doctor I didn’t want to be, and ultimately helped me shape the way I practice today. It’s what led me to refocus on performance-based care, injury prevention, and a holistic, full-body approach that truly supports long-term wellness — not just quick fixes.
Those challenges, as hard as they were, helped me find a renewed passion for chiropractic and a deeper sense of purpose in the work I do now.
We’ve been impressed with Restorative Heath and Performance, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Restorative Health & Performance is built on a simple belief: you deserve care that actually helps you move, feel, and live better — not just temporarily “manage” pain. My practice is located inside Greater Than Performance & Rehab, and I specialize in sports-focused chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, cupping, dry needling, and performance-based rehab.
What truly sets us apart is the full-body, integrative approach behind everything we do. I don’t just adjust what hurts. I look at how your entire system is functioning — mobility, stability, strength, posture, movement patterns, and lifestyle factors — so we can get to the root of the issue. My sessions blend evidence-informed chiropractic care with athletic-based rehab and recovery techniques, giving people both immediate relief *and* long-term results.
I’m most proud of the brand because it represents what I’ve personally experienced and now try to provide for others: thoughtful, individualized care that helps people get back to the activities they love. Every patient gets one-on-one treatment time, customized plans, and a supportive environment where their goals matter just as much as their symptoms.
For anyone reading, I want you to know that Restorative Health & Performance is a place for athletes, active individuals, and anyone dealing with pain, tightness, or movement limitations. Whether you’re trying to prevent injury, come back stronger, or simply feel better in your day-to-day life, my goal is to help you understand your body and empower you to take control of your health.
It’s not just about getting adjusted — it’s about helping you restore function, improve performance, and feel truly at home in your body again.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity is everything. In this profession — and really in life — staying true to who you are and how you want to serve people matters. I’ve also learned how essential resilience is. There will always be challenges, setbacks, and moments where the path doesn’t look the way you expected, but pushing through those moments shapes you in the best ways.
And above all, I’ve learned the importance of staying consistent in pursuing the dream that’s been placed on your heart. Even when it feels hard or slow, showing up day after day is what makes those dreams real.
