Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Greenwood.
Hi Dustin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up in a small town in east Texas, where I attended cosmetology school. After graduation, I moved to Austin to start my apprenticeship at an Aveda salon. After I completed my apprenticeship, I moved to Dallas to be closer to family. I started work at a well-known salon in uptown Dallas where I was introduced to the Goldwell color line and I was immediately hooked. I Sought out as much information as I could on the color line and attended Goldwell’s academy in New York City, where I attained a Goldwell master colorist title. From there, I also accepted a position as a Goldwell educator. I’m always taking classes to improve my skill set as well as learning some new ones. I actually recently received hair lingerie extension specialist training from the founder/ celebrity stylist Kiara bailey. I currently work at the collective salon in turtle creek as a color and extension specialist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hairstylist journey is typically never a smooth road! Going through my apprenticeship, I had to deal with So much criticism which can definitely be hard, but it was imperative to my career. I also had to adjust to living in a bustling city (remember I had only lived in my little town my whole life!) The pay as an apprentice is very little, so I worked a few jobs to make ends meet. While a lot of my friends were out having fun I was at work or in class! I’ve had to overcome my fear of public speaking and had to build confidence in communicating with complete strangers! I had to learn how to deal with giant egos and set myself apart and be seen in the massive amount of super talented stylists. I had to learn how to remain professional and continue to deliver consistent work even when my personal life was in disarray when my mother passed away. It definitely has not been a smooth road, but you learn how to jump those hurdles and keep on to the finish line!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a small, independently owned business. I am a color specialist, as well as a hair extension specialist. I pride myself on only using the very best products which have taken quite some time to curate! I only use gold well color and hair lingerie extensions (this is the same extension brand used by today A list celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez, and Britney Spears, just to name a few). I set myself apart from others by always pushing to find the absolute best not only from the products I use but in the education I receive. The five-by-five brand is known for expert results as well as making sure the client is educated on hair care specifically for their hair type and lifestyle. I offer all types of colors from fashion shades to live-in blondes and everything In between. I also offer extensions for all types of needs from simple fullness to a 32-inch full glam makeover!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
There’s not much surprise here, I tend to be a very open book. I think some people may find it surprising that I spend a lot of my free time on the road teaching color classes to stylists around Texas.
