Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Richerson
Hi Erik, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started cutting my brothers hair in Seattle WA over 20 years ago at our house. My dad always had a set of clippers in the house, and used to cut my brother and I’s hair at home to save money. Before long I picked up the clippers and was cutting kids hair from the neighborhood and school at my house. It’s been a long amazing journey. From there my wife who was my fiancée at the time told me that I should get my barbers license. I listened and enrolled in barber school. Working nights and going to barber school in the mornings was my reality for almost a year. After graduating and getting my barber license I worked at a friends shop. Then transitioned to a small humble space for about 2 years where I cut hair until moving my barbershop into a mall. From the mall I moved downtown in my town and created an award winning 9 barber barbershop. My family and I just moved here to Fort Worth a little over 6 years ago. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to cut hair when we moved here to Fort Worth. After praying about direction for our family I knew I had some unfinished business to do. I knew it would stretch me and pull me out of my comfort zone. I knew I had to train other barbers to learn how to cut amazing hair. That way we we as a company can insure that all of our customers are highly taken cared for by a highly qualified master barber. Hence Richerson’s Master Barber Academy trains and teaches students at a very high level.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right as we decided to move forward with our buildout, my wife was having very painful headaches that lead her to the hospital. After running tests on her they gave us the sad news that she had a brain tumor. In all of this we felt to trust that still small voice that was guiding us. So wounded we continued to move forward through the trial that had come to family. I am glad to say that 2 years after her diagnosis she is cancer free!
As you know, we’re big fans of RIcherson’s Master Barber Academy . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Richerson’s we are an exclusive brand, meaning that all barbers that cut at our shops have graduated from our Master Barber Academy. I forgot to mention in the past section that we also have a barber shop on the near southside on the edge of downtown Fort Worth. Our barbers are highly trained in bringing excellence in customer service as well as mastery haircuts. Our atmosphere is family friendly and up lifting. We want the kids that come in to hear wholesome conversations and learn some good wisdom that they can take with them in life. It’s not forced, it’s just our culture. Our prices will always be fare. We put people first, NOT the money!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Do what’s right, don’t cut corners. Hear from God and obey. If God puts a dream in your heart to do something big, don’t worry about the money, just go and the provision will fallow. I’m a big believer that one person can change your life for the rest of your life. Me understanding that I need get comfortable surrounding myself with people that make me uncomfortable is one of the keys to success. To clarify I have close friends that are successful business owners, and whose net worth is far beyond where I’m at, who also love me enough to challenge me in life to stay out of my comfort zone and believe in what I might think is impossible.
