Community Highlights: Meet Gustavo Gonzalez of Vortex air solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Gonzalez.

Hi Gustavo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started Vortex Air Solutions back in 2020 during COVID. Erik and I have known each other since middle school, roughly since 2003–2004. We both decided to pursue HVAC after high school, and over the years we kept in touch and decided to start a business together. This was all after gaining experience and also having another HVAC business of my own.

We decided to start Vortex because, 1) my business at the time was in a weird spot, and 2) he was ready to make that step to work for himself instead of for someone else. The business was established, and we ran it for about 3 years. In the 4th year, I made the switch to Vortex full time because things weren’t going well with my current business due to my business partners. They had a different view of things and didn’t really believe in marketing. Our line of business is extremely saturated, so marketing is essential in order to keep going. So I made the switch.

Erik had been struggling to grow the company, so I came in to help expand. We’re finishing the year with a 120% growth from last year with a healthy net. A lot of the things were already in place; we just needed a little boost. We focus on servicing people with honesty and fair prices. We don’t like to increase prices just because people live in nicer areas. Everything is the same across the board. We help people in need. We’re just a family-and-friends business providing service others can’t provide.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like anything, at the beginning it’s always hard. A lot of people don’t know where to begin. Who to talk to. Who to ask for help. It’s just a spiral of what ifs. Luckily I already had a little bit of experience and we landed some property management companies that gave us consistent work. We rode that as long as we could to where we saved enough money for actual marketing. Wrapping trucks. Funds to help grow the business. Also had connections within supply stores. Many people don’t know that they actually help businesses grow.

We’ve been impressed with Vortex air solutions , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re an HVAC company—everything air-conditioning related. From AC, heating, ventilation, blow-in insulation, and duct cleaning. We offer all services that have to do with HVAC. What separates us from others is that we provide all options to the customer, from repairs to replacement if needed. Many companies tend to claim that they can’t repair older units, when that’s not the case. They just say that to get the replacement in. We have fixed plenty of older systems, and people love us for that. Then, when it is time to replace, they go with us because we actually gave them the extra time they needed.

We love to use Goodman equipment. Many contractors in the field give it a bad name, but honestly, it’s been great for us. We have had the least warranty breakdowns on it. Warranty is easy to deal with. They always have parts in stock. People can say what they want, but it’s an amazing brand. I got one installed at my house earlier this year.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We will be 5 times bigger in 5 years. We have the consistency down. As long as we keep doing good to the people. We will be here in 5 to 10 years. More techs. More trucks. That’s the goal.
