Today we’d like to introduce you to Harold Leidner.
Hi Harold, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Dallas and have always had a passion for landscape design and construction. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University. Upon graduating, I worked for Lambert’s for approximately 12 years before starting my own business, Harold Leidner Company, which I’ve run for nearly 40 years.
It has been an incredible journey. I’ve genuinely enjoyed working with the clients we’ve had the privilege of helping, and I take pride in the designs we’ve created over the years.
Our company’s legacy continues as my son, who also holds a degree in Landscape Architecture, has joined the business. That uniquely positions us as a legacy family business in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Not only have we had loyal, long-term clients who return to us for new homes and evolving projects as their lives change, but we’ve also built a team with long-term staff and family involvement. That continuity defines who we are and what we bring to every project.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When you genuinely enjoy what you do every day, you tend to forget the bumps along the way. There hasn’t been a day that I’ve woken up without feeling excited to go to work. The opportunity to help our clients create beautiful designs and meaningful spaces continues to be incredibly rewarding.
The biggest challenge has always been staying intentionally small—keeping our service personal and focused, with a single point of contact for each client. We’ve made it a priority to deliver thoughtful, unique designs and the kind of personal attention people expect when they’re making a significant investment in their home.
Even with that personal approach, we’ve maintained the ability to offer a broad array of services: pool construction, drainage, sprinkler systems, lighting, landscaping, and even furniture layout and design. Offering all of these through one coordinated team and one dedicated point of contact has positioned us in a truly unique market space.
What also sets us apart is that the majority of my team are degreed landscape architects. We are, at our core, a design-centric company that builds. That focus on design excellence—combined with our ability to bring those designs to life—has shaped our company’s legacy.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Harold Leidner Landscape Architects has custom-designed and built amazing pools, gardens, landscapes, and outdoor living spaces for some of the most luxurious properties in Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow, Dallas, Fort Worth, Westover Hills, and Westlake for more than three decades.
Over 35 years ago, the Dallas landscape architects at Harold Leidner Landscape Architects began with the idea that the exteriors they designed were best built by the designers of those exteriors — and for good reason. Architects are university-trained and state-licensed to understand the aesthetics of design and the details of construction. The same goes for Landscape Architects.
We do not sell our architectural plans for other contractors to install. And, we do not take a fee to manage those contractors that we did not hire. We build, manage, account, and guarantee every aspect of the projects that we design. And for a good reason. For example, it’s common to see construction issues or questions arise that only the architect can answer. We know there are times these contractors will make those decisions without consulting the architect. Our experience has shown that those decisions can cause long-lasting problems.
Our landscape architects and builders have designed and built residential exteriors that are better integrated because of that knowledge and experience. The materials used are more sustainable. Energy is used more efficiently. Environmental decisions are sensible and the physical beauty of those exteriors is undeniable — and all from a single source.
We are still run by landscape architects in the same way. Technology enhances the process, but the ideas still start with a pencil and a roll of tracing paper.
When it’s all said and done, an exterior by Harold Leidner Landscape Architects is iconic.
