Community Highlights: Meet Herlina Sujanto of Kumon Math & Reading Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Herlina Sujanto.

Hi Herlina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in Kumon began in Florida in 2002. I first came across Kumon in 2002 when I was looking for a place to enroll my daughter, but there wasn’t a center anywhere nearby. However, the more I learned about the Kumon program, the more I was impressed by its ability to help children learn and grow academically. Seeing the program’s effective educational method firsthand really inspired me. This growing excitement, along with my strong belief in Kumon, eventually led to an exciting choice: I decided to open my own center in 2003 to share this valuable educational approach with the community.

In 2020, my family relocated to the DFW area. After guiding thousands of students in Florida for 17 years, I missed my students and Kumon families. Therefore, I decided to continue my Kumon journey by opening a center in the Carrollton area, where I look forward to sharing Kumon’s values with our community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. Before starting my Kumon journey, I worked as a Financial Analyst. Transitioning from that career to education was far from seamless; I faced the challenge of becoming an entrepreneur, as I wasn’t accustomed to people skills and the business side.

Working with students daily has taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and heart. I’ve also learned persistence, and it’s incredibly rewarding to witness their growth in confidence and abilities. Seeing that growth positively impact their families makes it even more meaningful.

We’ve been impressed with Kumon Math & Reading Center, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At my Kumon Math and Reading Center, I witness children discover their full potential. Each student progresses at their own pace, and it’s amazing to see the pride they feel as they master new concepts independently.

What sets Kumon apart is that it’s not just about math and reading; it’s about nurturing lifelong learners. The Kumon Method is a self-learning program that develops strong math and reading skills through daily practice. It’s a mindset, not just worksheets. Students start at a comfortable level, often below grade level, to build confidence and fluency, progressing step-by-step, mastering each concept before moving on. Over time, I see students become more focused, disciplined, and independent. Unlike tutoring, which addresses school struggles, Kumon is proactive, building a strong foundation for long-term academic success. Daily practice builds habits that carry over into school and life.

It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of this journey and witness the transformations that occur when children realize they can achieve more than they ever imagined. We celebrate every milestone, big or small. We ensure students feel proud, whether it’s mastering multiplication or reading their first chapter book, because when students feel seen and supported, they stay motivated and continue learning to achieve their full potential.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Opening a Kumon center was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken. Initially, I simply wanted a place for my daughter to participate in the program. However, the more I learned about Kumon, the more I felt compelled to bring it into our community. This meant stepping out of my comfort zone—investing time, energy, and resources into something new and unfamiliar.

However, I’ve learned that meaningful growth often comes from taking risks. Similar to my students, who challenge themselves to solve problems slightly beyond their current abilities, I had to stretch myself to make this dream a reality. And just as they gain confidence from their progress, I’ve found the reward of seeing children and families thrive has made every challenge worthwhile.
