Hi Janay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved hair, even as a little girl, so naturally doing something that involved hair was inevitable. I started out in a real estate position but would work on my first hair extension business whenever I had free time. Initially, I started offering clip-in hair extensions in the local area and online before I realized I was nowhere near prepared for the logistics of it all. I had only (1) vendor who constantly had issues with providing the hair I needed and always had mama drama. I had no clue about the hair I was selling, so when customers had questions or was mad about a product, I had no clue how to help or what to say. Needless to say, my first business was a complete flop, and I shut down my operations to regroup. Fast forward a few years and 7 kids (yes, 7 babies) later, I reopened my business with my husband that focuses solely on offering our customer’s hair extensions blending closely to their natural texture. Cambodian Hair Freak is the result of years of research, hard work, testing vendors, marketing, and aiming to offer the best of hair extensions & custom glueless wigs that we can!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting to this point has definitely proven to be a mountain of learning and researching!
While my husband worked around the clock to support us all, I became a stay-at-home mother. All I could focus on was learning about the hair industry and start something that would change the course of our family.
Understanding the fundamentals of pure Cambodian hair was one of the biggest struggles to overcome. Researching the specific texture, color, and characteristics took many years to hone down.
I’ve been scammed and taken advantage of before really narrowing down the pathway to this business while juggling to care for all my babies.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Cambodian Hair Freak was created to offer hair extensions & glueless lace wigs that focused entirely on Pure Cambodian Hair. We work with the local vendors in Cambodia to source and harvest the purest form of our hair in order to create an experience for our customers who want something outside of the traditional hair extension genre.
We’ve transitioned from a small starter business that sold just clip-ins to a growing & thriving company that offers custom wigs, bundles, closures, and all in between. I’m most proud of our growth and watching it continue is truly a blessing!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always into hair! You could easily catch me changing my doll’s hair left and right or helping my Mama do her hair in the bathroom. Eventually, I started offering hair services during school to get a few dollars and to hone down my budding skills on real heads. Plus, creating styles on my classmates’ heads in between classes was always exciting for me.
