Community Highlights: Meet Jen Moya of King Classics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Moya

Hi Jen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I was always into art. My love for hair grew and I went to school to get certified. Working at different barbershops with many different talented barbers I gained so much knowledge in their craft and began to create my own techniques that worked for me. One of my biggest challenges I put on myself creating those techniques was learning how to cut all hair types. As the years went by I took a huge leap of faith and left the barbershop and started working for myself moving my business to Downtown Dallas. After cutting in Dallas for years I recently decided to take another leap of faith and move my business to Plano. This summer coming up I will have been cutting hair for 8 years and the love I have for barbering is still so strong. Trusting in Gods timing and being obedient to his purpose for me has lead me to where I am and building up my relationship with him with time it will continue to grow in this new location. I truly believe changing my environment has helped me get to where I am today. Not only do I cut hair, but strive to have intellectual conversations that can bring healthy changes or keep us open minded in our perspective of viewing our purpose in life. Helping people with their outside appearance and confidence is what most people think a barbers job is, not knowing that the deepest conversations happen at the barbershop with the highs and lows of life. Being able to provide a safe environment for my clients is key. Leaving my clients with not only a great haircut and a smile on their face but something to think about for the week, being able to inspire or just provide a great experience is always the goal.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting my journey with barbering was a smooth ride, but it’s been a growing learning experience that I will forever be grateful for. At the time when I worked at barbershops in the beginning I was always the first female to ever work there. Back then female barbers weren’t really a big thing as it is today. Getting clientele was tricky due to men saying “ I would never let a female cut my hair” or “Do you even know how to cut men’s hair” etc. At times it would get to me because I felt that I always had to prove myself. Sometimes I would question should I even be in this field it’s nothing but men. What helped me to not lose my confidence was my desire to keep learning, watching other barbers and practicing on the clients I did have. Having a circle that believed in me was huge not only did my clients believe they also pushed me to keep going, the barbers would tell the walk-ins or their clients to get cuts by me saying “She’s good bro she knows how to cut we all let her cut our hair here.” And it was true I would cut the barbers hair so when people would come in my work was visible to the people. Just keeping faith and putting in the correct work really helped me push through. Building trust and confidence and keeping a student mindset helped me grow a lot faster to be able to push through those struggles. Recently moving to a whole new city has brought its small struggles, the majority of my clientele did follow me, but I’m challenging myself to promote the “old school” way and leave business flyers to put my business out there, just trying to get out of my comfort zone and get connected with new people in the area.

As you know, we’re big fans of King Classics. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
King Classics was a name I came up with that matched what I did for a living being a barber and how I promote. Although I do cut woman hair from time to time the majority of my clients are men. I’ve been cutting hair for almost 8 years and I still have lots of love for what I do. What I specialize in and the things the sets me apart from other barbers is hair types. I cut all hair textures and any hairstyle you desire either from a photo you show me to customizing a style to fit you personally or allowing me to get you out of your comfort zone and just trusting me. I am very big on details and ask a lot of questions if you’re a first timer to make sure you leave the chair with exactly what you wanted! Consultations are extremely important and most men say “Wow I’ve never been asked what I wanted I just let the barber do what they want I actually like that you’re asking” due to them being disappointed with the results from other barbers. I am most proud of King Classics for the time spent on not only working on my craft to provide a great clean experience that will leave you with a confidence boost every time, but also working on myself to provide a safe place for clients to be able to rest their mind, relax, talk about life or just make them laugh. Paying attention to detail with not only their hair, but also the energy they come with if they are in a rush minimizing talking time or if they want to talk then providing an ear to listen and or if they need advice coming with emotional intelligence to be able to advise them in a healthy way. It’s more than just a haircut it’s about building trust, friendships and opportunities for one another to grow all while boosting confidence mentally and physically! I provide a full service haircut, beard, eyebrows. I do cut kids 5 and older. If you have Locs, Braids or Twists I provide a haircut service for that specializing in the technique to cut with those hairstyles. I am open to new clients and excited for this new journey, new area and opportunities to meet people, grow and bring my art/business into this location!

What does success mean to you?
Success looks different in many peoples eyes. I believe that the smallest achievements you make in your life now lead you to the greatest accomplishments. Getting to the top the fastest should never be the goal. Longevity is what’s important having small progress on your purpose will take you further than any instant gratification, learning to have self-control, discipline and emotional intelligence is key to living a life of success and most importantly trusting in God. Obedience is greater than any sacrifice you think you may need to do. Doing the inner work allowing God to love and lead by pouring love into you so you can be filled up to pour love to the ones around you so others can receive love from God by experiencing you is success to me. Creating balance in your life, healthy boundaries, healthy habits and fixing your heart to always come with good intentions to prepare yourself for the next challenges you will face. Some think it’s how much money you have and I always say “Not all money is good money.” Being in tuned with what God has in store for you, because it’s a promise that what is for you nobody will be able to take. It’s already yours and it’s already done. The work people can’t see that you do is what brings the greatest success.
