Community Highlights: Meet Jeremy Edge of Escapingthe.com

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Edge.

Hi Jeremy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve always liked helping people. In high school, I focused on helping others more than Math or History. In college, I fell in love with the field of Counseling and how it could help many.

I also played video games most of my life. I’ve seen the good and bad of gaming from my personal and professional lives.

My counseling practice, Escapingthe.com, is the culmination of my love for helping others and video games. It’s a practice helping people find balance and health with online activities like gaming and social media.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve had a few challenges on my road to my private practice. Creating and opening the practice itself was a challenge to overcome. Finding the right practice model (private pay or insurance-based) was also a big challenge to work through. I went back and forth with taking insurance and not taking insurance until finally, I landed on not taking insurance.

Impostor syndrome is a term I’ve learned quite well since I started my private practice business. At times I feel confident and can take on the world with my practice. Other times, I feel uncertain if I should be in this role and have this practice.

I still face daily challenges in running the business around marketing, vision, and efficiency. However, I have great guidance and support to work through any challenge that I come against.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Escapingthe.com, PLLC is a counseling practice in Dallas, TX. We serve people 13 and older struggling with problematic screen use such as gaming, social media, pornography, and gambling. We provide individual, family, and parenting counseling sessions from a licensed professional counselor.

I am an International Gaming Disorder Certified counselor which is the leading certification for working with people with Gaming Disorder. I also obtained the Digital Wellness Certificate through the Digital Wellness Institute. I provide counseling services to help clients experience balanced, healthy screen use.

Daniel Echols, LPC, another therapist at Escapingthe.com, helps with a 12-step Internet and Technology Addicts Anonymous group in Dallas. The group supports people seeking complete abstinence from disordered screen use. He also provides support for those struggling with purpose and meaning in their lives.

Escapingthe.com has several online courses supporting parents and teens with balanced gaming. There are two on-demand courses, one for parents and one for teens and each is self-paced. The courses give parents and teens practical tools to help in their home life, relationships, and personal lives.

Escapingthe.com also runs a summer program for teens and young adults called Escapingthe.com Experience. The program has seven activities running during the day, Monday-Friday. The program encourages balanced living, life skills, and healthy gaming through engaging in hands-on activities like paintball, team-building activities, equine therapy, cooking and exercise class, and woodworking. The last day of the program is at the National Video Game museum in Frisco where the youth see the history of games and enjoy some arcade games.

Escapingthe.com separates itself from other practices because it specializes in problematic screen use. I’m personally very proud of the name of the practice and logo as it is the perfect representation of the message I’m trying to tell.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
