Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Courtney.
Hi Jordan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up loving music. I sang in choir all through school and even made all state in high school. I started rapping when I was 15 but I didn’t take it seriously. I joined the army after high school and became a combat medic. I was medically retired in 2022 and continued to work in medicine. I decided at the end of 2024 that I was going to take a chance and leave the medical field to go to school for recording arts. I also bought a DDJ FLX-4 and started learning how to DJ and produce music at this time. I dreamt of doing music full time as a teen and never saw it as a reality, but after years of doing what was “practical” I decided to do something that made me “happy.” It was thru my school, Mediatech in Dallas, that I found Co-Host and was hired on as a wedding dj. At the time I saw it as a good way to still make extra money while being able to stay in music full time when I finished school. Now, it’s evolved into something I love. I branched off from co-host to create “WeddingswithDJJD” as my own entity. I have already booked a few weddings for myself and got some reviews going on theknot.com. I still aspire to be a touring DJ and play my music to the world as Ominyra, but I don’t plan to quit doing weddings. I love being able to create the atmosphere for someone’s most important day in their life! The smiles and tears I get after we’re done dancing and the couple thanks me for an amazing evening makes my heart so full every single time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The transition to going solo has had its challenges. There are tons of companies that want you to pay them for marketing and leads but don’t actually follow through. It’s a common “noobie trap” in the industry. The most difficult part of going solo is getting bookings of course, and these companies take advantage of that desperation. I know that everything good takes time to build, so I do my best to make the few bookings I do get as memorable as possible so that couple will tell others about me and my business will grow steadily!

I specialize in weddings but I also do corporate events and parties as well. My military background helps me to bring the next level of professionalism to any event. I produce my own music under the name “Ominyra.” I make a wide variety of EDM and I know what it takes to get a club moving. I take that energy from the EDM scene and bring it with me to weddings! The biggest concern I hear when planning with couples is that their DJ won’t get the crowd hype and won’t keep the dance floor packed. I have solid emcee skills, I’m not afraid to get uncomfortable so I always get the crowd hyped up for the newlyweds. I can mix any genre from any generation with confidence so I know I have what I need to fill the dance floor as well. DJ JD is the DJ you want to party with!

It was extremely lucky that I stumbled across co-host and fell into the wedding industry thats for sure.
