Community Highlights: Meet Justin Emerson of Emerson Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Emerson.

Hi Justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After the Army I drifted from job to job. I finally decided construction would be my career. I have family in the trades and grew up working with my hands so it wasn’t a hard decision. I started working for a General Contractor as a laborer. During this time I was exposed to many skills, trades, and admin related aspects of construction. Things like structural framing, reading architectural drawings, plumbing, electrical all came naturally to me. In a span of four years I worked my way from laborer to foreman. After spending some time in that position I made the decision to start my own company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. While I did learn about the “business” side of construction. I had neglected to learn anything about “business”. As a solopreneur it was very difficult for me at the start. At one point I was wearing “7-9 hats”. Over time I managed to pull together a great team of people.

We’ve been impressed with Emerson Construction, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in Home Remodeling – bathrooms, kitchens, and additions. We are slowly starting to move into the Custom Home space.

Once of the best qualities about the company is we’re small. That does limit us in project size and scope, but it does offer us a unique ability to make personal connects with out clients. In most bigger companies when you need to make a change or have questions. You have a hard time speaking with the right person. When you finally do, they have to “run it by” their boss, and bosses boss. With our company, you will only ever have to speak with Myself or my Project Manager. Both of which can operate with full autonomy. Typically any questions, changes, or adjustments can be resolved before the phone call is over with.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You will have problems on day 1, and it will be overwhelming. Break the problems down into manageable bite sized tasks, and solve them one by one.

Only work during your “business hours”. As entrepreneur’s we have this overwhelming urge to keep working. That is fine in short stints, but a week of 16-18 hour days will cause more problems than it solves.
