Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Black.
Kat, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I approach design with a deep, personal passion for curating cohesive luxury interiors and truly thoughtful spaces. My eye for spatial harmony started early. When I was a child, you could regularly find me rearranging my room to make it more functional and cozy!
After attaining my design degree, I was promptly hired as a space planning and design assistant for a highly recognized interior design firm in Dallas. I quickly advanced to a lead designer. In 2021 I decided to take the leap and create Kat Black Interiors and even after 15 years in the industry, I continue to grow more in love with the work I’m privileged to do.
What I thrive on most is creating genuine spaces for my clients that tell an elevated story. I love injecting a bit of an edge and taking thoughtful risks, and I always encourage my clients to step outside their comfort zone to create a space that is uniquely theirs. My specialty is mixing old with new to achieve a collected, eclectic feel – a true tapestry that tells their story, even if it doesn’t appeal to everyone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, I’m always game for a design challenge, but the toughest parts of my job often involve the human element -specifically, when clients struggle to trust the process.
It can be really challenging when we work with clients who are either super indecisive or terrified of taking any risks. Usually, that means they have a hard time picturing the final result. In those cases, we slow down. My job becomes less about designing and more about building that trust – we walk them through the vision step-by-step so they can get excited about stepping outside their comfort zone. That’s how we create a space that feels personal and amazing, not just ‘safe.’
The flip side of that is the client who knows exactly what they want and gives us zero room to breathe creatively. While it’s efficient, it means we can’t really inject that bit of edge or unexpected magic that makes a design truly special. We try to gently push back and find little moments where we can still make the design sing.
Ultimately, we’re looking for projects where we can truly collaborate. When there’s that shared trust, the magic happens.
