Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Henderson-Walker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been a numbers person but never knew where I belonged. It was 2018, and I was working a dead-end corporate job with fairly no substance, living paycheck-to-paycheck, three children, trying to figure my life out. That is, until an extended family member, Laquitta Smith spoke life into me and told me to join her tax class. Laquitta is the owner of Pretty Quick Tax Services. I will forever be grateful for her because without her I might not be where I am today. I heard the words she told me, and I knew it was time for me to step out on faith. So, I put my electric bill on an extension and paid my deposit for her class. The season started January 2019, and my first official client was Lucy Ferrer. I prepared her taxes at a family corner store, standing up at the counter. I was nervous, but Lucy didn’t care, she believed in me. That changed my life. I knew then what my life’s mission was. I was on a roll after that. I still worked my full-time job, but on my lunches and breaks, I would be in the break room working on my tax clients. I had a goal to prepare 15 clients, and by the end of the season, I had 50. I ended up being the top performer working under Laquitta that season. I felt empowered. It was then I knew that I wanted my own tax business. The next year, 2020, I went from 50 clients to a little bit over 100. That corporate job I was still working; I had been there 6 ½ years, with only 1 promotion. I was mentally tired. My mom gave me a pep talk and told me Jehovah had something in store for me and not to give up. I just wanted to do taxes and not have to be employed by anybody. The worst came in August of that year because my mom passed away suddenly. I was broken, my mom was my biggest cheerleader, and her death took a lot out of mentally, physically, and emotionally. I felt like my mom passed from overworking herself and I was determined to not pass away like that. I wanted to give up, but I then I remembered my mom left me a voicemail saying, “I am so proud of you,” and that really kept me going. I would listen to it every single day. So, before the end of 2020, I told Laquitta that I was ready to branch out on my own. She gave me her blessing, and Luxury 1 Tax Services LLC was born. I obtained my LLC, structured my business, and the rest is history. Fast forward to now, I have a team of 25 tax professionals making their debut under Luxury 1 Tax Services this upcoming season. I myself have over 200 tax clients, so I am continuously evolving and growing. I have a six-figure tax preparation business, and I have been able to leave corporate world. I have established business credit and have a luxury car and cargo van under my business name. I am married to the love of my life; I now have a total of 6 kids, a yorkie and a grandbaby (blended). I also have some other business ventures that my husband and I are currently working on, our trucking business being one, Walker Express Transport.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but having obstacles or challenges is only a test of trials. I’ve had to deal with being the underdog (not being known and having to get my brand out there to people), being financially irresponsible (dealing with overhead expenses), and learning how to be an entrepreneur (evolving in the role of becoming a self-made Boss).
