Community Highlights: Meet KS Kim Gim of KS Energy Consultant

Today we’d like to introduce you to KS Kim Gim.

KS Kim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi My name is KS Kim Gim

I was born in seoul Korean.
I immigrated to the United States in 1987 and have been a resident of Dallas for nearly 38 years. Like many immigrants arriving with little to no resources, I came to America shortly after completing my military service in Korea. With limited means and as a newcomer, I initially intended to work in an entry-level position while attending school. I applied for a day porter role at a building cleaning service company, but during the interview, the company president unexpectedly offered me a senior role as Human Resources Manager. Although unfamiliar with the responsibilities, I accepted and began working in that capacity.

Over the course of approximately two years, I gained valuable experience before resigning due to personal reasons. Subsequently, I accepted a subcontractor position with a similar company and embarked on a career as a building cleaning subcontractor. For about ten years, I worked steadily in this field without major difficulties.

My life took a dramatic turn when I ventured into the large-scale video rental business, which was then declining but appeared promising to me at the time. Unfortunately, I did not recognize the downturn early enough, invested heavily, and incurred substantial financial losses, ultimately leading to the closure of the business amid significant debt. This experience severely damaged my credit and led me to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy—a profound challenge and the most difficult period of my immigrant journey.

Determined to move forward, I decided to pursue a long-held dream of becoming a journalist. In 2004, I joined a local Korean-language daily newspaper. I later worked with a weekly publication and a radio station, and today I am a freelance journalist. Since 2009, I have collaborated with YTN TV, Korea’s foremost news broadcaster, reporting on news throughout Texas for Korean audiences worldwide.

At the same time, I transitioned from the building cleaning industry to the electric energy sales sector. After responding to a Korean newspaper ad seeking energy sales agents, I began working full-time in this field. My skills were soon recognized, and I was hired by Tara Energy’s headquarters as a sales account manager specializing in Korean client accounts, where I worked for four years.

In 2014, I launched my own independent energy brokerage business under my name, steadily expanding its reach. Guided by the principle of supporting clients from start to finish, I have earned recognition as a reliable broker. Concurrently, I continue my work as a freelance journalist, dedicated to sharing Texas news with a global audience.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
expanding.
