Community Highlights: Meet Kyeong Hee Choi of Park seung chol hair studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyeong Hee Choi.

Hi Kyeong hee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career in hair in my early twenties, around 1987.
Near my home, there was a small salon where stylists played old K-pop music while working. They looked genuinely happy, yet at the same time, they transformed people through their craft. That scene left a strong impression on me. I remember thinking, “This is a job where you can enjoy yourself and make others feel beautiful.” From that moment, I naturally became interested in studying hair.
I started as a salon helper, learning step by step on the job and gaining hands-on experience. I worked toward my licenses little by little, all while dedicating myself fully to the craft. At the time, my family situation was not financially comfortable, so I worked without days off, hoping to support my family in any way I could. As my passion for technique grew, I challenged myself by participating in various hair competitions and industry events, earning multiple awards along the way. Through these efforts, I was able to obtain the Korean Master Craftsman certification at a relatively young age.
Later, I was given the opportunity to move to the United States. I began my journey in Los Angeles, then worked in Houston, and eventually settled in Dallas, where I continue my career today. Adapting to a new environment and culture was not always easy, but the trust of clients who believed in me gave me strength. Each time I saw customers leave satisfied, I felt reassured that I had chosen the right path.
Looking back, what has shaped who I am today is not just skill or experience. More than anything, it is the trust built between people. Being able to witness my clients’ happiness is what brought me this far, and that feeling remains the greatest reason I continue to love and pursue this work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There was a time when spending hours alone drawing felt most comfortable to me.
But when I chose a career that required facing people every day, communication became the first challenge I had to overcome.
Life in the United States brought a new obstacle—the language barrier. Night after night, I extended my days by attending late ESL classes. It wasn’t easy, but every step of that journey has shaped who I am today.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
“My favorite books are fashion magazines and detective novels, and I enjoy old pop music.”
