Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani Proper.
Hi Lani, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Lani Proper, and I’m a 21-year-old Licensed Eyelash Technician Specialist out of Dallas, TX. I have been lashing since August 2021 and can wholeheartedly say I have found my passion and a passion that has changed my life forever. Starting from the beginning, when COVID-19 was still at its peak and we were all trapped up inside, I decided to take a leap of faith, with the full support of my family & husband, and become a full-time lash artist. At first, it was a difficult journey and required a lot of dedication and patience, but in the long run, it has totally paid off. All of my professional skills & being able to run a professional beauty business have all come from my amazing mom, Jamie. She has been a hairstylist for over 25 years and has taught me everything she knows about customer services, building clientele, creating a salon space, and so much more. After about 3 to 4 months of continuous practice, I finally decided to take my first “in-person” client, and the full set took me over 4 hours to complete, I was so crushed and discouraged. That did not stop me from pursuing my dream, and with more practice and support from clients all around DFW, I have become a successful Licensed Lash Artist who cannot wait to continue to grow and expand my knowledge for my clients & business!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the most difficult lessons I had to learn was this, “A client will become a friend before a friend will become a client.” In the beginning, it really crushed my confidence that even when I was doing $40 full sets, only a handful of my family and friends would come model for me. But now that I am more experienced and charging normal prices, everybody who didn’t want to come in the beginning wants to come now, but still at a discounted rate if not free of charge. Only the people who genuinely supported you and built you up in the beginning should be the only ones reaping the benefits once you become successful.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very involved in school and enjoyed participating in a lot of different extracurricular activities. When I was a freshman in high school I took an interest to makeup, eyelashes, and basically, anything beauty related and went on to develop my own Strip Lash Brand, the original Lani’s Beauty Bar if you will. Strip lashes just never fully caught my attention and full dedication though. So, when my senior year, 2020, we decided to go full-time virtual learning due to Covid, I took that opportunity to pursue other opportunities in the beauty & lash industry. That’s when I came across lash extensions for the first time, before it was really a booming industry, and decided to try them for myself for a few months. After that, it was history. I was absolutely in love and addicted to my lash extensions, and I wanted to be able to give other people that boost of confidence I was feeling with my lashes.
